FRAGMENT #1 HARD LEFT PRESS 32 Pages, Black & White $ 5.00 U.S. Diamond Order Code: DEC04 2666
By Matt Dicke, Vincent Diga III, David Hollenbach and James Kei An anthology featuring stories of lost love or hardship taking place in feudal Japan, a telephone both, urban cities and over surreal dream landscapes. Artwork in the vein of such creators as Kent Williams, Dave McKean, Ashley Wood and Bill Sienkiewicz ranging from lush collage and fully painted art to expressive ink and line work. Fragment was created as an artist collective enabling illustrators to express their voice through sequential art.
Having received praise by the likes of George Pratt and Guy Davis, Fragment is an impressive collective of artists, each with their own distinct style. We were able to snag some pages and sketches from the artists for your pleasure, Fragment will hit shelves in February, be sure to pre-order with Diamond Order Code: DEC04 2666.
The following are some preliminary sketches plus pages 1 & 2 of David Hollebach's story entitled "TOM".

Here we have pages 1 & 2 of the story "DRUDGED" with commentary by artist James Kei.
When Matt approached me for this project, I was very excited to be a part of his vision, until I realized what a difficult undertaking it was to become. To create a fully enclosed story, eight pages in length is a lot harder than it sounds.
The idea for the short story "Drudged" came from observing a friend of mine who became increasingly frustrated with finding a steady job. And alternately, listening to my roommate complaining about his office job and was looking to escape.

Being an artist I felt the need to express these views on the constraints of having a "day job", and the woes of becoming controlled by "The Man".
Oddly, right after the book was printed, my friend eventually landed a job that he now hates, and my roommate quit his job and found a better one. So it seems that I possess pre-cognitive abilities! I think my next story will be about how I win the lottery.
The following are a wide range of sketches along with pages 1 & 2 of Vincent Diga III's story.

Matt Dicke supplied the following sketches for his story "OX HOUR", partly inspired by Japanese prints from Yohshitoshi and Hokusai; like the one to the right which depicts the same Japanese fable that inspired his tale. Also shown are pages 1 & 2 of his story along with a promotional cover piece and Matt's commentary on FRAGMENT.
Fragment all started with a conversation that David Hollenbach and I had about comics. Early on in our friendship we realized that we had a lot in common, besides being Illustrators and influenced by similar artists, we specifically were inspired by painted comics.
So I had an idea that maybe I could get a bunch of my illustrator friends who are equally excited and committed to creating artistic comics and self publish our stories as a group. So almost a year later here we are with an amazing and beautiful book.

Now with issue one under our belt we are a bit more confident and excited to start on and experiment with issue 2. We are hoping to go larger and if our money holds out add some colour. So keep a look out and to stay up to date check out www.hardleftpress.com for news on Fragment and even more preview pages.
