The project is the brainchild of Italian comics guru smoky man who has been devoting a special section of his website Ultrazine to Alan Moore and his works since the year 2000. In association with Black Velvet publisher Omar Martini, smoky planned an Italian language print version of the project to include the best pieces from the site, before approaching Millidge with the idea of publishing an English language version. With Millidge's help the project quickly grew from the initial idea of a 32 page comic-book format magazine to the massive trade paperback tribute that will be published in May.
Millidge was also one of the people behind another charity comic project, Food For Thought, published in 1985 under his Flying Pig Enterprises imprint. It was the first charity comic in aid of Ethiopian famine relief and preceded Heroes for Hope and Heroes for Hunger by some distance. Smoky man and Omar edited the expanded Italian edition of Pocket Essential: Alan Moore published by Black Velvet in 2002.
