UNTIL YOUR HEART STOPS v9.9
by Brian Domingos

"Round of Applause for your Stepmother"

July 27th, 2005

It's been a while since I did some reviews, so I decided to grab a couple new buys and write some stuff up on them. The first three, I bought about a month ago. The last one, I bought last week. It’s a varied list for the most part. It's only four because the shipping list is so big this week. There's some good stuff in it, so be sure to check out the bottom section.

THE BROCCOLI AGENDA

Writer/Artist: David Yurkovich
Sleeping Giant Comics
$7.95

My first exposure to David Yurkovich was LESS THAN HEROES, his super-team book that saw collection last summer from Top Shelf. It's a different take on superheroes, falling more into the vein of the Mystery Men than the Avengers. Strange and obtuse heroes with even stranger enemies doing god knows what.

THE BROCCOLI AGENDA, which came before LESS THAN HEROES, is part of that universe. It's the story of Dr. Broccoli, AKA, "Doc-Broc" a superhero who needs help from the FBI. He sits down with Agent Swete, a man made entirely of organic chocolate and begins to tell his origin. He was once a boy obsessed with broccoli, whose parents were killed by a mobster. The boy grew into a man who one day, to his wishes and dreams, he sprouted broccoli instead of hair. He became a member of The Basic Four, a group of other likeminded food based superheroes.

It's absurdist comics at its best. Irony-free and full on weird, it skates the boundaries of the things we know and the things we'd never approach. It's a short story that uses the trappings of the Same Old Thing to live and breathe all new energy. Yurkovich chose the most straightforward format, three panels per page, making the tale completely accessible. The surprises here are in the emotion and the empathetic moments.

I highly recommend THE BROCCOLI AGENDA to anyone who can get their hands on it.

THE BALLAD OF SLEEPING BEAUTY, vol. 1 TPB

Writer: Gabriel Benson
Artist: Mike Hawthorne
Colors: Michael Atiyeh
Letters: Omar Mediano
Beckett Comics
$21.95

THE BALLAD OF SLEEPING BEAUTY was first brought to my attention about a year ago. My old roommate was down for a party and he was going on and on about it, having read the first issue as part of Beckett Comics' Free Comic Book Day haul. He liked the artwork and the story and recommended it to me.

I wasn't looking for a new book at the moment, but I always thought of it when I was looking for things to read. It made sense for me to get the collection.

BALLAD… is a variation of the classic Brothers Grimm story of the similar name. Now, rather than knights and royalty, we have Cole, an aimless Western Hero, Red, his would-be sidekick and a beautiful girl and the cursed town that houses her. Writer Gabriel Benson talks in the afterward about how long it took him to find the right niche for his angle. He landed with Western and it really works. You can funnel almost any type to drama through Western themes and make a completely new story. The West is an idealized place of vigilantes and desolate locales, independent and far removed from their neighbors. They might as well be in different universes.

Anyway, the story here is about Cole's redemption and Red's journey and it's easy one. Benson's script is pared down to bare essentials with light, relevant dialogue and strong pacing. It's eight issues, but it flies by, and not in a way that feels like a waste. The strength of the work comes through with Mike Hawthorne's able hand. I've talked about him before here – he's a great artist. He can adapt to any style and situation, skillfully illustrating the Western subjects in a fun way. From his fun-filled action scenes, to his quiet moments, Hawthorne hits all the notes. That's not to say that Benson didn't give him a great set up. There's, then, the colorist, Michael Atiyeh, who captured the mood of every scene perfectly.

THE BALLAD OF SLEEPING BEAUTY is an entertaining read and worth the time, but might not be worth the money. I got mine at a discount, so I didn't feel the brunt of the $21.95. That's a lot for a book like this. I know most new publishers are making a place for themselves in the Direct Market, but overpriced trade paperbacks aren't the way to go. I hope that Beckett's new relationship with Image Comics helps reign in the prices.

VALENTINE: FULLY LOADED, vol. 1 TPB

Writer: Daniel Cooney
Artists: D. Cooney (p); Amin Amat, Ramon Torrez, Peter Palmiotti (i)
Letters: D. Cooney, Ed Dukeshire
Red Eye Press
$14.95

VALENTINE was a whim purchase. I mistakenly bought the second volume, not realizing that it was a volume two. So I put that off and found volume one.

"Fully Loaded" collected the first six issues of Daniel Cooney's VALENTINE series. Dana Valentine is an assassin with ties to the C.I.A. In typical late 90s flavor, this femme fatale is trying to stop World War III.

I was immediately struck by the artwork and tone of the story, thinking of Brian Michael Bendis' JINX. I know Bendis is a four letter word for a lot of people, but JINX is one of the best single works from any creators working today. So I think that its comparison with VALENTINE is a compliment. It's really just the attitude and feeling coming out of the female lead that gets me there.

Dana herself becomes more defined, less ambiguous and clichéd as the issues pass. You can see Cooney's planning all the way through, elaborating on relationships between characters and filling out back stories wherever necessary. I like that the book has the Do-It-Yourself feel to it, and the charm of knowing that Cooney busted his ass for the book certainly helps.

It's important to note that the issues came out over a couple of years, so there's growth from page to page. Cooney's line work gets tighter and his storytelling strengthens with every page. At first glance I probably wouldn't have read on, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Of course, already owning volume two may have had something to do with that.

ULTIMATE X-MEN: The Most Dangerous Game, vol. 11 TPB

Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artists: Stuart Immonen (p); Wade von Grawbadger (i)
Colors: Justin Ponser with Frank D’Armata
Letters: Chris Eliopoulos
Ultimate Marvel/Marvel Comics
$9.99

I've been vaguely following ULTIMATE X-MEN since it first started. Mark Millar bored me doing the same stories we've seen a hundred times before. Bendis brought a different kind of life to the book, which was nice. Now they have Brian K. Vaughan, who is doing, I think, a bang up job.

I avoided his last tpb, because of the Kubert factor, but I decided to come back to the book mostly because of Stuart Immonen. Immonen did such a good job on ULTIMATE FF that I just had to check out the arc.

The "Ultimate" universe if supposed to be about classic characters re-envisioned and I think a lot of writers forget this. Vaughan rethinks the dated Mojo and Longshot, both of whom are very much products of their times. Mojo is still in the media business, but rather than being an inter-dimensional media mogul, he's a fat, albino TV executive with a hit show. 'Longshot' is the source of his fame – alleged murderer and the undefeated contestant on his "Kill The Mutant" reality TV show. The X-men head to Genosha, an island in the Indian Ocean where mutants are outlawed and hunted, to save this persecuted mutant.

It's Standard X-Men Plot #17, but Vaughan adds some mystery, a couple other re-imagined villains and a team of rogue X-men to the search. The ending was not what I expected and I really feel like Vaughan and Immonen were just having some fun here.

If you have to buy an X-book, this is the one to watch.

Those books were pretty good. Now, as we take a look at the deluge of books shipping today, as publishers rush to meet the end-of-the-month cut off.

I really enjoyed Ande Park’s UNION STATION, so I thought I’d give CAPOTE IN KANSAS a look. The book has the story of Truman Capote researching the murders for his uber-novel, IN COLD BLOOD. I haven’t that that yet, but I grabbed it from the hands of some high school kids on Monday, so I hope I can get it done before this ships. Those poor summer reading kids are going to miss out.

Allll most done. I plugged through the new FLASH collection this weekend. It’s really solid work from Geoff Johns and Howard Porter. The current arc, their last one, is just as good. It’s a little bit “everything and the kitchen sink” but it’s working out well enough. Maybe. Two issues to go.

I read this last week and it's pretty good. It's the humor you'd expect from Keith Giffen and J. M. DeMatteis, and the artwork by Joe Abraham is as good as ever. I like his straight to colors pencil work more than most people's. The plot still revolves around Milo and his other-dimensional Super counter-part, so some sight gags are available. If you hated the "I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT THE JUSTICE LEAGUE" and all that, look elsewhere. Fans of that, though, will be pleased.

Warren Ellis' JLA story finally sees the light of day. Butch Guice's preview artwork looks great, but the covers are shitty.

MAY050237 JLA/CYBERFORCE
DC Comics/Top Cow
$5.99

I was sort of a CYBERFORCE fan back in the day, liking the characters a bit and following the first ten issues or so of the regular series. Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke's JLA was excellent, though, so that's where my interest comes in. I hope it's sold out when I get there, so I have no excuses…

$9.99

I’m glad to see more of Kelley Puckett’s work collected. I loved his BATGIRL stuff and now we get all eight issues of KINETIC for ten bucks. At a buck twenty-five an issue, this is the best deal of the week. I should mention, too, that Warren Pleece's artwork really shined through out this series. The DC Focus line was sort of a bust, but I'm glad to see some collection support.

MAY050295 THE LOSERS #26 (MR)

$2.99

Every time I try to get away from THE LOSERS I get dragged back in. I love the premise and the characters and since I know it’s guaranteed through the end of the series, I keep looking for an exit, but I never find it. Andy Diggle, Jock and Co. always entertain. The last arc answered more questions for us and made more arise. And just when I thought that the fill-in artist talent pool couldn’t get better, they get Colin Wilson to do a short arc. This is the guy who tore up Ed Brubaker’s POINT BLANK a couple years back. He’s awesome. And now he’s doing THE LOSERS and now I can’t wait to see how it goes.
