UNTIL YOUR HEART STOPS v15.3
by: Brian Domingos

Scenes From The Future: XXXVI

September 6th, 2006

Welcome to the beginning of September and a brand new installment of "Until Your Heart Stops." A new month approaching means a new PREVIEWS catalogue, which showcases all of the items shipping through the comics industry. The books below are scheduled to arrive in stores mostly during November and some in December of this year. This is just a small amount of the thousands of comics, books, toys etcetera that are available, so check out a catalogue of your own for all the other pages and pages of stuff. This time around, we're starting from the front of the book to the back.

I love these B.P.R.D. books. Each mini series (and subsequent collection) has worked to make the title a stand-alone winner, rather than just a spin-off book.

As much as I love my HELLBOY books, I'm glad to have a skilled group in co-writers Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, artist Guy Davis and colorist Dave Stewart delivering an entertaining book. It’s a tight story that has its fingertips in the HB Universe but branches out into new tales of the characters that could have only flourished in this separate title.

Over the last few arcs, the cast has moved cross-country, gained a militant new leader and lost one of its favorite faces. Each time they push on, against the new threats, finishing the job that Hellboy started.

I recommend all of these collections, but start at the beginning with “Hollow Earth” if you feel like jumping in. For ongoing readers, “The Universal Machine” - this month's first book - is a great new piece of the B.P.R.D. puzzle.

B.P.R.D.: THE UNIVERSAL MACHINE TPB (PAGE 31, $17.95; Order Code: SEP060024)

I don’t know a ton about The Spirit - only what I’ve pieced together over the years. I read THE BEST OF THE SPIRIT from late last year and it was remarkable how like so many things THE SPIRT is. It’s as if you can’t do a lantern-jawed private eye without having Denny Colt looking over their shoulder.

Here we have a Batman/Spirit team up that will open the gates to Darywn Cooke’s new ongoing SPIRIT series next year. Cooke is absolutely the guy to draw the BATMAN/SPIRIT book – I just wish he were writing it, too.

It’s not that I have a big problem with Jeph Loeb – I don’t, really – but he is traditionally hit or miss. Luckily, his Batman stories have been largely successful, story-wise at least. What I did learn from Eisner’s SPIRIT stories, though, is that a big part of the character is subtly and the things that aren’t said. That’s not always Loeb’s strong point. He tends to jackhammer the script into the mouths of his characters.

That said, I’m hoping that Cooke has some influence over the script and it’s true to the characters.

Cooke moves over to Superman in November with the opening arc on SUPERMAN: Confidential. It’s a new “Legends of the Dark Knight” style series with different creative teams doing stories about the big, blue Boy Scout.

He’s working along with Tim Sale, who previously handled the Man of Steel in the excellent SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS mini series. Sale might actually be the one guy who makes Superman/Clark look dumpier than Frank Quitely. Maybe. That’s not to say that he’s not good at what he does. He’s a great artist with a specific style that needs to be carefully placed on different characters.

My concern for the series is material in the long term. I can’t say that the preview pages of Superman Vs. The Royal Flush Gang were all that thrilling. Against Jack Knight and Bobo Benetti? Sure. Against Su. Per. Man? Not so much. Of course, it was just a preview.

Cooke has shown off his strength with the character in THE NEW FRONTIER and Sale has a great running track record here, so there’s a ton of potential. I’m just hoping that the long term forecast is strong.

Ah… month three of the “Worldstorm” revamp continues with Christos N. Gage & Doug Mahnke’s STORMWATCH: Post-Human Defense and Garth Ennis & Chris Sprouse’s MIDNIGHTER.

I’m torn over this new STORMWATCH book. I’ve been there since Day One of the franchise. I’ve been there for the ups and the low, low downs. Gage is reinventing the series as an on-the-street, super powered police procedural. (That’s something I can get behind.)

He’s taken Stormwatch out of the sky, into a local precinct where Jackson King can run the show from the ground, aiding the local joes with his expertise in super villainy. Gage plans on using new characters and a handful of old ones, re-imagined (Diva?!).

Mahnke is one of my favorite artists these days and I’m thrilled that he’s doing a new monthly. His gritty, larger-than-life/in-your-face style should work perfectly. He’s inking his own work which garners great results, but I’m worried that he may fall behind due to that fact. Hopefully he’ll take the help if he requires it.

Then there’s the new MIDNIGHTER book.

Thank god Wildstorm/DC hooked Ennis up with an artist like Sprouse. He’s one of the best storytellers around and with his style being on the slightly-more realistic” side, he is perfect to make these “Midnighter takes on the World” stories a little more believable.

Had they used, say, John McCrea, it would have been more comedic than serious and wouldn't have had the same result.

No, Sprouse is perfect and I can’t wait to see it.

Moving to Image Comics, I’m excited to see a mini series from writer/artist Jonathan Hickman.

Hickman was one of the contestants in the first “CBR Idols” competition. His style looked like pages from Adi Granov dragged from a bumper for a hundred miles. They were stark with sketchy inks and a ton of attitude.

Hickman didn’t win, but now we get to see the project he’s been able to spend some time on. I for one am glad that he didn’t win at that time. It’s given him a chance to regroup and come back even stronger. Now he’s doing his own mini series – on his own terms – and the guy who won way back then is penciling MARVEL ADVENTURES comics.

Hickman's series THE NIGHTLY NEWS covers the following:
As an act of violence spirals out of control to encompass the entirety of the news media, a cult has emerged from the errors and retractions that have ruined careers, marriages and even lives. Under direction from his cult master, The Hand leads an army of followers committed to revolution, willing to die for their cause.
Sounds pretty interesting. And check out that sweet cover.

I had completely forgotten about OUTLAW NATION.

It was Vertigo's unofficial replacement for PREACHER (complete with Glenn Fabry covers) from Jamie Delano and Goran Sudzuka. It came out and I said, "yeah, it looks okay. I'll wait for the trade." And that was just about seven years ago – like six years, 50 weeks.

It's the tale of Story Johnson, a 100 year old crazed, fiction writer who returns home after 25 years lost after Vietnam. It ran for 19 issues and was canceled – with no collection. Ooops.

Now it's back, this time from Desperado/Image Comics, in one huge black & white collection. And here's my chance to pick up what I never read in the first place. Delano adds another Goran to the mix – Goran Parlov – and between him and Sudzuka, it's going to be a good looking collection.

The problem now is Desperado's track record with release dates. I just hope it's not another seven years before I get to read this.

OUTLAW NATION TPB (PAGE 152, $15.99; OC: SEP061798)

These PUNISHER holiday specials haven't been so hot. There's a collection out this month that contains three stories: two that aren't worth reading and a third that's just sort of "eh" (sorry, Diggle) so I'd skip it.

But this special, this could be different. It's Stuart Moore and C. P. Smith – two guys who have teamed up to do single issues and school everyone around them. They started on a short story for X-MEN UNLIMITED that was perfection in 13 pages or so. Then they got a full size, 48 page issue of WOLVERINE that was subtle and touching, attributes that usually skip the character altogether. It was one of the better WOLVERINE stories from the last couple of years.

So hopefully they'll pull it off with Frank Castle as well. Moore knows when not to script and how to hit all the pressure points. Smith's minimalist style is perfect for these stoic characters. Not to mention, he's actuall improved since his time on STORMWATCH: Team Achilles and the NEW INVADERS (if you can believe it).

At the very least we'll get a competent inventory issue of THE PUNISHER. At the best, we'll get another classic from this titanic new team.

PUNISHER: X-MAS SPECIAL (MARVEL PAGE 56, $3.99; OC: SEP06 2130)

Oh POWERS, I hope that some day you’ll be as good as I remember…

The worst thing that ever happened to Bendis is that he got Famous. And Popular. It was then that he went into overload and the work has unfortunately suffered. I don’t think I’ve loved anything he’s done since ALIAS ended.

The new Icon relaunch of POWERS has had its moments. I was at the literal edge-of-my-seat during the first arc, but the second arc used the momentum of the first to be worth reading and added little else.

I come back everytime because I love the characters. I think that Walker & Pilgrim are one of the great partner teams – McNulty & Griggs, Pembleton & Baylis, Benson & Stabler – and I need to see how their story plays out. I love the police stuff, the guy-in-the-box-fuck-you-cop stuff. I love it love it.

“Cosmic” makes me worried. Fingers crossed.

POWERS: COSMIC, VOL. 10 TPB (MARVEL PAGE 84, $19.95; OC: SEP062162)

There’s something sick and twisted about Garth Ennis’ PUNISHER MAX series. Each arc is more desperate and loathsome than the last and it has got me hooked.

Ennis has made me cheer for Frank and his abuses. The torture of his prey and the justice he brings is oh-so-righteous, so honorable, I have no choice but to read with open wide eyes.

And it’s not like there aren’t things keeping me from this feeling. The coloring, by Dan Brown, is abominable. It's offensively bad. And the artists, ranging from competent to grotesque, don’t help all that much. But the story, oh, the story, brings me back every time.

The last volume, “The Slavers” left me with a sick feeling. I don’t expect any less from “Barracuda” and whatever resolution Ennis shoves down our throats.

PUNISHER MAX: BARRACUDA, VOL. 6 TPB (MARVEL PAGE 106, $15.99; OC: SEP062183)

So I read Jason McNamara & Tony Talbert's Original Graphic Novel CONTINUITY a couple months ago, and I wasn't blown away. I respected what they were attempting, but by the end, I didn't feel like it was the book that it was when it started out. This makes me hesitant to trying their first book, FIRST MOON.

The Xeric Award–winning FIRST MOON is a historical mystery about the 110 colonists who disappeared from Roanoke, Virginia back in 1587. In the present day, a descendent of these people tries to solve the case.

That right there sounds pretty good to me. It's a much more straight-forward concept than the solicitation for CONTINUITY.

I'm trusting the FM crew and the folks at AiT to make my comics buying dollar go a long way.

FIRST MOON OGN (PAGE 228, $12.95; OC: SEP062992)

Back when Stuart Moore was writing his column for Newsarama, one of the books he first talked about was VIDEO from Stephen Buell. (You might remember this – it was around the time that Patrick Neighly was setting the indie world on fire with his OGN, SUBATOMIC.)

Anyway, VIDEO, a mini series from Lost in the Dark Press, was another of those "wait for the trade" books and now it's the time to get onboard.

It surrounds the Second Coming and the media, and given the current social climate, I'd say it's pretty topical and appropriate.

I don't know anything about it other than the eye-catching cover and the high concept. These days, that's not always enough. I'll keep you posted.

That's about it for the PREVIEWS. There are various collections (100 BULLETS, FABLES, etc.) but they've been consistent all the way throughout, so I don't need to say much about them. As for this week:

I never would have thought that I would have been disappointed – even ever so slightly – by James Robinson's run on the Bat-books. He brought Batman back "One Year Later" and it was hit & miss. I really loved the Jason Bard stuff he did – with Bard as Batman's daytime eyes and ears – but it's been so far ignored by Paul Dini and Grant Morrison. Hopefully they'll pick up on these threads once they get on their feet. At the very least, it's there for future writers. So, all in all, "Face The Face" is a solid "C" – it passes the class, but it's nothing to really brag about.

I found a copy of the long out of print tpb of the original mini series about six months ago. It's not anything special, but it's nice to have. Now, apparently, Wildstorm is reprinting the book all over again. It's very 1994 and very dated and many won't be happy with it. I know they have the new series due out in October, and I would have liked to have seen a collection of the first five issues of the ongoing series instead. It's purely for esthetic purposes. Anyway, if you like DANGER GIRL, this is J. Scott Campbell in the raw.
