UNTIL YOUR HEART STOPS v25.9 by Brian Domingos
A Trio of Oldies
September 17th, 2008
Last week’s look at recently released first issues got me in the mood to do some other short reviews.
On Saturday, the Wife and I took a post-summer day trip to Newport, RI. It had been a long, work-filled season and we didn’t really get to do much other than work/rest/repeat. As I am an addict, I made sure to check the comic shop locator to see if there were any shops in the area. I love that feeling of walking into a new store, not knowing what kinds of fun surprises I might find.
I popped in the zip code of Newport and, yeah, there’s a store right on the main drag. I noted the address and actually spotted the shop on the way down the hill into the shopping area. We had a nice walk, lunch and on the way out, we stopped in the store.
Now, OK. It’s not the prettiest of stores. The storefront looked normal enough – posters, ads, DARK KNIGHT stuff – and as you walk in, the first thing you notice is the Clutter.
There’s stuff everywhere.
The middle of the front of the store has a half dozen small rows of long boxes/back issue bins. The same number of 50¢/5-for-$2 half boxes marks the front of the bins, and of course, seeing the potential for a bargain, that’s where my wife planted herself.
Behind the bins, in the middle of the store, was a series of self-standing wire racks with various import DVDs all stacked on top of themselves. On the floor beneath the racks were piles of newspapers, empty boxes and just general junk.
Behind that was a table, likely used for that day’s Magic tournament, where a woman sat, with take-out containers of fried food, watching some sort of import DVD on a small laptop computer. The table was placed in front of the back-wall of the store, where the New Releases were stacked. There wasn’t much there, but it was a fairly small week. I had trouble getting a good look, though, as I had to carefully climb over a web of extension cords (powering the laptop, of course). On top of that, the only lights on in the store were over the back issue bins. So it’s a cluttered, obstacle course of boxes, newspapers and power strips between the customers and the new comics. Not my favorite service plan.
The entire right side of the store had those standard wooden wall racks (just about every shop I’ve been has had them at one time or another.) The racks were filled to the brim with the last, I don’t know, six months worth of back issues. It was sort of amazing. It was overflowing – neatly – with the last year’s worth of books and it was organized in some strange system. It was almost alphabetical, but it was mixed up at times and a little twisted at others. The racks ran along the entirety of the wall and I followed it back to the front of the shop where my wife held down the fort at the 50¢ bins.
The owner/manager/whomever stood in-between a string of nearly empty display cases and a wall of trading/collectable cards. He was talking to a customer about god knows what and didn’t even acknowledge me until I brought four comics from the 50¢ bin up for purchase. “You know, you get one more free,” he said. “Yeah,” I answered, “there’s really nothing else we’d like.” “Huh,” he replied, taking my two dollars.
And that was that. It’s weird to see stores like that still open. It’s a dark, dank room with water-stained ceiling panels and dust-ground boxes. It’s not inviting at all. And once you get in there, it’s a challenge to do your business. Plus, there were a like five trade paperbacks total. That’s no good. But what’s weird is that the guy must be doing business somehow. Those wall racks had hundreds and hundreds of recent comics and that stuff has to get paid for somehow.
I don’t know.
I haven’t mentioned the place by name because I don’t me to pick on the guy, but man, I won’t be making a special trip any time soon.
As for my old comics, I found a bunch of ten year old DC one-shots from their various ‘events’. It was just sort of how it worked out. They’re relevant in their own ways and they were stuff I probably would have picked up had a I seen them back then.
GIRLFRENZY!: JLA: TOMORROW WOMAN #1
Writer: Tom Peyer Artist(s): Yanick Paquette (p), Mark Lipka (i) Colorist: Pat Garrahy Letterer: Kurt Hathway Format: Oneshot (1998) Publisher: DC Comics Price: $1.95
The “Girlfrenzy” event was a fun one - DC did a series books that all shipped during a skip-week featuring their female characters. There’s a Donna Troy one, Barbara Gordon-Batgirl, Lois Lane, Nash AKA, The Mist and others. I picked up the TOMORROW WOMAN one because it was drawn by Yanick Paquette. Paquette’s work on THE BULLETEER and TERRA OBSCURA was terrific and I always like seeing the older work of an artist I really enjoy. The story covers the week that Tomorrow Woman was a member of the JLA. As you may recall, she occurred in only one issue of JLA (#5), the result of the combined efforts of Dr. Thomas Oscar Morrow and Professor Ivo. She was created to be the perfect artificial being and infiltrated the JLA with the goal of ultimately destroying them. The problem was that Morrow and Ivo were too good at their skills and Tomorrow Woman developed a conscious, overcame her programming and destroyed herself. It was one, solid single issue and this here fills in the gaps of what happened during the trust-gathering week. There’s a plot about some genetically-altered infants and there’s some space alien whom lands on the Earth to make sure everything goes to plan. His name… is Taint. Nice one, Tom Peyer. Paquette’s art is good – not as strong as it is now, but you can see the potential. Overall, it’s not important reading but it was a nice treat.
NEW YEAR’S EVIL: THE ROGUES #1
Writer: Bryan Augustyn Artist(s): Ron Wagner (p), Bill Reinhold (i) Colorist: Noelle Giddings Letterer: Bob Lappan Format: Oneshot (1998) Publisher: DC Comics Price: $1.95
I’d never ready any of the original “New Year’s Evil” one-shots, aside from the PROMETHEUS book included in the JLA: STRENGTH IN NUMBERS trade paperback. They showcased the bad guys, which isn’t a bad idea. I was originally was introduced to The Rogues by the Mark Waid/Bryan Augustyn run on THE FLASH. I didn’t really get to know them, though, until the Geoff Johns/Scott Kolins run and now, with the “Rogue’s Revenge” miniseries two parts deep, this seems rather timely. Here, the Rogues (Capt. Cold, Heatwave, Weather Wizard, Mirror Master and Capt. Boomerang) break into a church in the Far East in the country of Banjipur to steal the Sun Disk of Meshta. The Rogues don't know that Jesse James, the Trickster, has set them up as a diversion to take the item himself. The local army shows up and Pied Piper's there and and it all gets more complicated. There's a big fight with a Lizard god and Trickster and the lizard turns into Neron, who's not all that happy with Trickster after the whole UNDERWORLD UNLEASHED thing. (Neron gave the villains of the DCU upgrades and Trickster was the only one whom passed.) In the end, it all gets worked out , and Heatwave stays behind with the monks of the church. The rest of the Rogues sound like themselves, but they don't have the personalities that we know now. The art is by Ron Wagner and Bill Reinhold. It's decent enough, with OK storytelling, but it's not the most exciting stuff I've seen. The lettering from Bob Lappan is distracting, though. It doesn't look right – as if everything is perpetually italicized or something. I'm glad to have read this and even more glad to see how far the Rogues have come. It goes to show how much work Johns put into these characters.
WILD TIMES: DEATHBLOW #1
Writer: Norman Partridge Artist(s): Tommy Lee Edwards Colorist: Digital Chameleon Letterer: John Workman Format: One-shot (1999) Publisher: Wildstorm/DC Comics Price: $2.50
Back in June of 1999, Wildstorm had a five-week event called “Wild Times” which placed its characters in different time periods and, subsequently, had them interacting various DC characters. I had read a few of these at the time – the GRIFTER and WETWORKS issues – but I had apparently missed the DEATHBLOW issue. “Death Rides a Horse!” follows Michael Cray, one of the last, true gun-slingers in the end of the 19th century, riding shotgun as protection for a stagecoach headed to Mexico. Along the way, the coach is intercepted by a steam-powered biplane and the cargo is stolen off the top as the driver gets gunned down. Cray is left with the gun-toting nun, Sister Maria and they’re off to track down the missing item: a coffin. The two of them trail the coffin and Maria explains the importance of the body inside (turns out to be Jonah Hex and he’s part of an equation that can bring back the dead). The bad guys succeeds in turning Arizona into Zombietown and Cray and Maria kill a couple dozen of them and eventually break the spell. The story isn’t the best of plots – it’s a oneshot by author Norman Partridge (I had to Wikipedia him as I’d never heard of him) and it looks like he’s got a limited amount of comics experience. It’s not a bad story, though, overall. There’s a nice mix of Western weirdness and action – plus, there’s a cameo by Bat Lash for good measure. The art’s by Tommy Lee Edwards, complete with lettering from John Workman, so it’s an awesome looking book. That alone made it worth the 50¢. It was also seeing what was also coming out from Wildstorm at the time: PLANETARY #5, THE AUTHORITY #4, PROMETHEA #1 and Joe Casey did a little write up about this forthcoming book, MR. MAJESTIC…
So I got some strange things I was curious about – but nothing too fancy.
Things I left behind:
HELLCOP #1 (Joe Casey) THE BROTHERHOOD #3 (Writer X), BRIGADE v2 #2 (Liefeld/Myrat Micheals) AZTEK: THE ULTIMATE MAN #7 (Morrison/Millar) HELLHOLE #3 (Scott Lobdell/Adam Pollina) SUICIDE SQUAD #67 (would have liked this but I haven’t read the previous 66 issues…) And a ton of 80s/90s VIZ not-porn.
Anyway, this week’s shipping list is mighty. Let’s take a look.
Upcoming… Books and items shipping September 17th, 2008

 - JUL080206 AIR #2
Vertigo/DC Comics $2.99
I really enjoyed the first issue of AIR. It's hard to create a new series that people will want to read on a regular basis. I think that G. Willow Wilson and MK Perker have done a great job with the atmosphere of the book. It deals with flight, which has a strange mystique on the whole, and throws in some terrorism, conspiracy and pseudo-geography and you've got a book to watch. The art is excellent, as well. After CAIRO, I wasn't sure how Perker's stuff would look in color, but it's a cartoony style with a lot of depth and Chris Chuckry's colors are a perfect fit. I'm preorderin' this here sucker until they don't make it no more.

I caved in a picked up issues 10 and 11 a few months ago because I wanted to see what a ll the hubbub is about. This book us friggin' perfection. OK, this is the first of the Frank Tieri issues – I was wrong last week. But it's not like it really matters – Chuck Dixon's last issue was a heaping load. Batman and a dragon or some such bullshit. Really dumb. And Ryan Benjimin's art didn't look so hot, either. I feel like I'm alone in this but I'm sort of bored by the whole “Death of Cap” thing. I don't know – I like Cap as a character but he's got a boatload of lame villains and a lot of baggage that I don't really care about. I think that Ed Brubaker's done a fantastic job, telling the best possible story – I'm just looking for the end already...JUL082274 CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI 13 #5 $2.99 JUN084350 CASE CLOSED GN VOL 25 $9.99 JUL080191 CASEY BLUE BEYOND TOMORROW #5 (OF 6) $2.99 MAY083872 CASTLE WAITING VOL II #12 $3.95 JUN084215 CASTLEVANIA CURSE OF DARKNESS GN VOL 01 (OF 2) $9.99 JUL080141 CHECKMATE #30 $2.99 JUN084224 CHIBI VAMPIRE GN VOL 10 (OF 13) (MR) $9.99 JUN083896 CHINESE HERO SC VOL 07 TALES O/T BLOOD SWORD $18.95 MAY084044 CISCO KID VS WYATT EARP $3.99 APR080142 CLASSIC SPIRIT STATUE $175.00 JUL080017 CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #3 $2.99 DEC070042 CRIMINAL MACABRE MY DEMON BABY TP $12.95 JUL084139 CRIMSON SPELL GN VOL 02 (A) $11.99 JUL080119 DC SPECIAL CYBORG #5 (OF 6) $2.99 JUL080105 DC UNIVERSE DECISIONS #1 (OF 4) $2.99
