UNTIL YOUR HEART STOPS v30.1 by Brian Domingos
Cotopaxi
July 15th, 2009
Continuing my look at new comics, I’ve got five new mini-reviews – “First Impressions” – of various miniseries that have hit the shelves in the last month. It’s all pretty decent, to tell the truth.
DARK REIGN: ZODIAC #1 (of 3)
Writer: Joe Casey Artist: Nathan Fox Colors: Jose Villarrubia Letters: RS & Comicraft’s Albert Deschesne Format: Miniseries Company: Marvel Comics $3.99
For the most part, I’ve enjoyed the “Dark Reign”-era of Marvel Comics and “Zodiac” is positive symptom of the new status quo. It’s always been risky putting the bad guys in charge – especially formally – as it can take some of the edge off of the baddest of the bad. We’ve got Norman Osborn thinking about politics of appearances and he’s forced to bite his tongue and stifle his crazier, more evil urges. He’s shackled into doing things with the facade of the public good and sometimes, it even is good. “Zodiac”, luckily, is a result of that change in behavior. The mysterious masked man has taken on the titular persona which once stood for a dozen D-List Villains (whom he killed). He’s amped up and decided that Osborn’s a sellout and needs to be punished. Zodiac is the baddest of the bad and it’s a glorious read.
Joe Casey gives this new character the hard edge out of the gate, as the book opens after Zodiac has single handedly slaughtered 100 H.A.M.M.E.R. agents. It’s gruesome, but it frames the book in the right tone. We see how bad Zodiac is without a whole lot of exposition. It’s a done deal. We learn that Zodiac has a mole in Osborn’s organization and has assembled a bunch of nobodies to take down Osborn (Clown, Manslaughter Marsdale, the Whirlwind, the Trapster, and the brand-new character, Death Reaper). Clown was used in Casey’s DEATHLOK book, so it’s nice to see them reunite in strangeness. Then, Zodiac has a knock-down drag-out fight with the Human Torch and it’s pretty excellent.
Nathan Fox supplies the art and he’s doing terrific work here. I originally loved his cover for Brian Wood’s FIGHT FOR TOMORROW book a bunch of years ago and then his pages on DMZ about a year ago. He’s a fantastic artist, with an indie/non-traditional style that makes his superhero work that much better. He has European influences and at times seems to be channeling directly from Paul Pope’s pen. The result is densely drawn and pages packed with dramatic and organic story.
Casey and Fox have produced the perfect black comedy summer tie-in book. It’s well thought-out and loaded with characters with nothing to lose. I enjoyed the hell out of this. It’s a three issue story, so get it while it lasts.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE #1 (of 7)
Writer: James Robinson Artist: Mauro Cascioli Letters: Steve Wands Format: Miniseries Company: DC Comics $3.99
I’ve seen dozens of reviews of the first issue of James Robinson’s JUSTICE LEAGUE story, “Cry For Justice”. It’s either a five star review or a zero star – I’d like to think it’s something in-between. It’s not the best book I’ve read this year and it’s far from the worst.
I think people have been waiting too long for it. I think that’s the problem. Because this issue, part one of seven, suffers from little more than being “Part One of Seven”. It’s all set up with, each of the character stating that, yeah, they’re out for Justice. Some have valid points – others, not so much – but it’s just the set up. Now, if we come back in six months and it’s only more of “I want JUSTICE”, then the bores that trashed it will be right. But I have faith in Robinson – I know his writing and how good he is – so I’m not worried. I like the cast – the Hal Jordan/Ollie Queen partnership, I like the Ray Palmer inclusion. I’m excited for more of the Blue Starman, Mikaal Tomas, plus Supergirl and Batwoman. The concept of a pro-active Justice League team is a sound one – one we’ve seen before (JL Elite) – but, given the current tone of the DCU, it makes sense. With the senseless deaths of Martian Manhunter and Batman, it’s just the latest attempt to right those wrongs. I don’t blame Hal for his decision. He’s got a point. And, based on the character introductions and their Cries For Justice, I see the point.
The art is fully painted by Mauro Cascioli and it is nice looking but it suffers from the typical stiff storytelling problems that come from painted figures. That’s not to say that it doesn’t work some of the time. The Mikaal/Tony scene was heartbreaking. Ray Palmer & Ryan Choi vs Killer Moth was laid out well and a fun scene. Cascioli’s colors are vivid and lush, which can really show off his chops.
The story is supported with hefty backmatter: there’s an essay by Robinson about the reasoning and the background of the creation of the book. It also features one of those two-page origins of Congorilla by Len Wein & Ardian Syaf, which is interesting.
So, were I to grade “Cry For Justice” with a letter, I’d give it a C/C+. But it’s early still, and I think that after a few issues, we’ll see how good it can be.
JSA VS KOBRA: ENGINES OF FAITH #1 (of 6)
Writer: Eric S. Trautmann Artists: Don Kramer (p), Michael Babinski (i) Colors: Art Lyons Letters: Pat Brousseau Format: Miniseries Company: DC Comics $2.99
Kobra has been used in the DCU quite a bit in the last couple of months, developing the terrorist cult into more religious extremists than just numbskull revolutionaries. It started in the final Greg Rucka CHECKMATE story, "Castling" (co-written by Eric Trautmann) dealt with Kobra’s genetic research and tampering on a global scale. It was followed up in this year’s “Faces of Evil” issue, FOE: KOBRA (written by Ivan Brandon), introducing, Jason Burr, the new head of the Cult and which serves as a bridge between CHECKMATE and this, JSA VS KOBRA.
Trautmann takes various threads and crafts basically a Checkmate story disguised as a JSA story. It starts with Mr. Terrific dealing with the loss of his love, Sasha Bordeaux, the Black Queen (and former bodyguard of Batman) whom “died” during FINAL CRISIS: RESIST. She was effectively rendered “inert”, in an OMAC-caused coma… it’s a long story. But anyway, Mr. Terrific is grieving over her and he gets attacked by a suicide-bomber Kobra cult member outside of the JSA Headquarters, which brings the whole team into the fight. It sets up the JSA trying to stomp out another suicide cell. Unbeknownst to them, Burr uses this time to infiltrate the JSA HQ and get important info out of their computer network.
It’s a action and plot-packed first issue that nicely sets up the miniseries. Trautmann has a solid handle on the characters and does a great job at pacing out the dueling plots. He’s focusing on Mr. Terrific, which is great, and using the rest of the JSA as supporting cast for the moment. He has a great voice for technical jargon and the espionage atmosphere. I was mildly interested from the start, but now I’m onboard for the duration.
And a part of that is the art, from Don Kramer and Michael Babinski. I’ve stated before that I’m not really a Kramer fan, but I have enjoyed his JSA work in the past. It’s particularly strong here, looking like the best work he’s put out in years. I don’t know if it’s the addition of Babinski or what, but it absolutely shines. And Art Lyon, the colorist, is a perfect fit for the new style. I was surprised it looked this good and was glad that Trautmann got such a solid art team.
I’ve been following this story for a while, so it was just the story I was looking for – new readers, they might have a problem with the characters, but if they stick with it, it will surely work out.
MARVEL DIVAS #1 (of 4)
Writer: Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa Artist: Tonci Zonjic Colors: Jelena Kevic Djurdjevic & June Chung Letters: VC’s Cory Petit & Chris Eliopoulos Format: Miniseries Company: Marvel Comics $3.99
Lastly, I have MARVEL DIVAS, which has the unfortunate case of having the name “Marvel Divas” and a cover by J. Scott Campbell.
Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa first came on to the scene to write the family-centric/street-level Fantastic Four in MK 4, and since then, he’s written a variety of likeminded, emotional stories. MD is one of those stories, showing four prominent women in the Marvel Universe - Patsy Walker (Hellcat), Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), Monica Rambeau (Capt. Marvel) and Angelica Jones (Firestar) – whom hang out and complain about the usuals: men, superheroics, work, etc.
People have made the “Sex and the City” comparison and it’s not really appropriate – the template seems similar, but it’s actually clever and appealing and the characters are engaging. This isn’t the sappy romance and not-so-clever penis puns that plagued “SatC”. This has real characters, placed together in a believable way (met after a failed round of superheroine speed-dating), and the fact that they having night jobs, doesn’t impact a lot of the story. There’s no ‘diva’ posturing or bitchiness, it just sounds like we’re eavesdropping on their honest and frank discussions.
The art’s by Tonci Zonjic, whom I first saw on IRON FIST, and it’s a classic look (Alex Toth-ish) yet in the realm of modern artists like Marcos Martin and Javier Pulido. The figure work is delicate, cute and charming. The pair of colorists - Jelena Kevic Djurdjevic & June Chung – add a subtle palette of rich, earthy tones.
Aquirre-Sacasa does a masterful job of making me care about the characters and, because of that, the cliffhanger carries a lot of weight. No one’s more surprised than me that this was any good. The price tag is a little much for a simple miniseries ($3.99 wasn’t necessary) so I won’t be getting more issues. But I might look at the trade paperback.
I’d been putting off reading Cameron (SEAGUY, MANHATTAN GUARDIAN) Stewart’s noir webcomic SIN TITULO for a while. This was for no particular reason other than me not really being into webcomics. I always forget to check every week and then I get around to checking and it’s delayed and then I look up and it’s been three months and I haven’t even thought about it.
But I dig Stewart’s work (even own some original art) and when he twittered about his most recent update (#83) and I gave it a whirl… and I ended up going back to the beginning and reading the whole damned thing all at once. It starts with the main character Alex going to a nursing home to collect his recently-deceased grandfather’s belongings and the plot wheel get turning. He finds a picture of a strange woman in the box and sets off to determine her identity. It leads her to a nasty orderly who leads him to a strange alcove that looks like a sex club. He has a weird experience there and ends up on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, beaten and carless. And then he loses his job and… the bad stuff keeps rolling downhill.
Stewart uses an eight panel format for each update – two rows of four, vertical-standing – and he worked out the proper pacing early on. There are a few installments that seem aimless until the story goes back and wraps around itself. It has an elegant simplicity to it, using intricate storytelling and a “always raising the stakes” plot.
I’m not sure how long Stewart intends to continue his story, but it’s been two years and 83 parts. Based on the pacing, it’s possible for there to be another 50 parts, easy. I certainly hope there are – I’m just getting onboard. After last week’s big shipping list, this is a relatively quiet week. I’m sure next one – pre-San Diego – will be a big one.

Vertigo/DC Comics $39.99
It used to be, that you would have to give a new reader the second volume of PREACHER to see if they are sucked in. The first arc of Volume Two, "All in the Family" is a “in or out” arc – and they are usually in. This, the first of many hardcover editions contains the first 12 issues, which has the excellent introductory arc, the decent-but-not-as-good-as-the-first second arc as well as the aforementioned “All in the Family”. That's a deal-sealer. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon – comic masters and it's all proven right here.
MAY090519 PUNISHER #7 Marvel Comics $2.99
Rick Remender's PUNISHER has been annoyingly good. I don't want to read it monthly. I really don't. I hate to, actually. Andy Diggle's THUNDERBOLTS has been a must read for me. It gained a new focus as “Dark Reign” drifted in and we see some cast changes and death and drama. I missed number two of THE UNKNOWN but I've caught up as of this week and, oh man, Mark Waid is just getting started. #2 had a dramatic chase on a train and ended with a creepy-as-hell cliffhanger.
#3 gets to the point, with Catherine and Doyle getting one step closer to solving the mystery of the Afterlife. Waid and artist Minck Oosterveer are really on to something. There's a second UNKNOWN miniseries planned for the Fall, so there's more on the way.
MAY090730 UNTHINKABLE #3 (OF 4) Boom! Studios $3.99
Like THE UNKNOWN, I had missed the second issue of UNTHINKABLE but, I'm caught up now. Make Sable and Julian Totino Tedesco's look into the almost future is fast-paced and brutal. I thought #2 went a little too fast – the plot seemed to accelerate out of control, but #3 is a perfect middle chapter.
