UNTIL YOUR HEART STOPS v30.3 by Brian Domingos
Hang on to Yourself
July 29th 2009
So San Diego Comic-Con 2009 has come and gone. It was a different type of experience for me this year – I had the main comics news sites open and refreshing every hour or so, which is the typical process. The new part, though, was the following of some creators via Twitter; getting small updates from Heidi & “The Beat”, James Robinson, Cameron Stewart, G. Willow Wilson, Rob Liefeld and the likes. And also, seeing the reaction from Brian Michael Bendis – one of Marvel’s most prominent writers – whom did not attend the 125K+ person show.
(I watched – fast-forwarded through most of – the 3 hour “Attack of the Show” coverage on G4. It was tedious. It would be helpful for someone to tell Olivia Munn that she’s a ‘7’, at best.)
The main reason I follow the sites is for the news and, this year, it was pretty lackluster. There’s some noteworthy stuff from the main companies and little bits of other material, but there’s nothing that blew me away (despite G4’s Blair Butler’s attempts to overinflate/hype these stories).
Dark Horse announced a few new works from Gerard Way: volume three of THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, “Hotel Oblivion”, from Way and Gabriel Bá. We’ve got the second volume coming out in trade paperback this Fall, so that’ll get us primed for more.
Additionally, Way and co-writer Shaun Simon will join artist Becky Cloonan on THE TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS, a superhero book based on the sensibilities of the comics from the ‘90s. Seems like a winner, easy.
Former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, is working with DH to renew the classic characters SOLAR: MAN OF ATOM, MIGHTY SAMSON, TUROK: SON OF STONE, and MAGNUS ROBOT FIGHTER 4000 A.D. I know many of these were created decades ago, but I only know them as members of Shooter’s universe (which didn’t last all that long). There’s a lot of potential here and I hope it gets a fair shake.
There is a handful of Dark Horse properties in film development, like UMBRELLA ACADEMY, FEAR AGENT, CRIMINAL MACABRE and FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND.
Last bit of news is that novelist Janet Evanovich is getting a series based on her NASCAR character, Alexandra Barnaby. Evanovich is best known for her novels featuring the bumbling/love-lost Private Eye, Stephanie Plum. My wife is a huge fan of those SP books and I’ve listened to an audio novel or two. They’re pretty good. But my wife hates the Barnaby books. So we’ll see. Maybe I’ll get her to review them when they are released next year.
Over at DC Comics’ mature imprint, Vertigo, there was a talk about the previously announced I, ZOMBIE from Chris Roberson and Mike Allred ongoing, as well as a variety of new Original Graphic Novels.
I love that Vertigo is doing so much OGN work. It’s an excellent storytelling format and a great way to get material that, might not sell well as a miniseries, out on the shelf in an easy to grab volume. REVOLVER is from graphic novelist Matt (TWO SISTERS/SUPER SPY) Kindt about a character with duel identities and the aftereffects of terrorist attacks. DARK RAIN is the second Vertigo OGN from INCONEGRO author, Mat Johnson and VINYL UNDERGROUND artist Simon Gane. It’s “a heist during set during Hurricane Katrina” which sounds like a blast.
There were then a wide range of new Vertigo Crime books. The first two, DARK ENTIRES and FILTHY RICH are due August 18th and the next group (along with the previously announced book) is made up of THE EXECUTOR from Jon Evans and Andrea Mutti and FOGTOWN by former DETECTIVE COMICS writer Anderson Gabrich and Brad Rader. Set in 1953 San Francisco, it’s described as a typical Private Eye story with a twist.
In the regular DC Universe, the main JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA book, with its cast of, what, 30? will be split into two books, the second being JSA ALL-STARS from Matt Sturges and Freddie Williams II. The pair is currently featured in FINAL CRISIS AFTERMATH: RUN! and their new book seems to feature the younger members of the J.S.A.
Geoff Johns confirmed that he’s writing a FLASH: BLACKEST NIGHT miniseries (lots of dead Rogues) drawn by Scott Kolins, as well as an ongoing FLASH book after FLASH: REBIRTH wraps. He’ll write the main book and Sterling Gates will start a KID FLASH book, which will work in tandem with the main book, much the way the two GREEN LANTERN books currently run (and it totally works.)
James Robinson discussed his upcoming run on JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, with the cast featuring Donna Troy, Dick Grayson/Batman and Mon-El in the Superman roll. It will also feature, at least, Hal Jordan and Congorilla. The rest of the cast is a mystery at this point.
DC also announced that they have acquired the characters, the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS, whom will be integrated into the DCU in a similar way to the Milestone and Red Circle characters. I know that Marc (MANHUNTER/TORSO) Andreyko always had interest in writing it, so maybe that'll work out for him.
Lastly, the new reprint of the first volume of HITMAN is the beginning of a reprint of the whole series. We’ve still got 37 or so issues left uncollected. It’s just a matter of time at this point, which is exciting.
The Wildstorm panel confirmed that the books are getting new creative teams in 2010 – feels like a step down from what we currently have in the books. WILDCATS #19 will begin the run of Adam Beechen and HACK/SLASH artist Tim Seeley. Beechen said that it'll be the place for most of the Wildstorm Universe characters to exist, which is a nice touch. Seeley, I only know from his cheesecake covers, but there's a WILDCATS pin up floating out there that's pretty decent.
THE HIGHWAYMEN co-writers Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman take over THE AUTHORITY with issue #17 and Al Barrionuevo (BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS) will join with issue #18. I loved THE HIGHWAYMEN and Barrionuevo was always the strongest of the team of between him and A.J. Lieberman.
Phil Hester and the unknown Cruddie Torian take over with GEN13 #33. I like Hester's work but can't find a thing about Torian.
The second WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY miniseries, “One Foot In The Grave”, comes from Gail Simone and Horacio Domingues… and that’s it. No STORMWATCH, which means it’s canceled, which was inevitable but still heartbreaking.
I’m not overly impressed. But, thinking about it, I totally figured out how the whole WSU could be saved. I should pitch something.
The big news of the con, and really only announcement from Marvel Comics is that the publisher has acquired the rights to the “thought-in-litigation-hell” MARVEL MAN.
I have a prediction that it'll go like this: oversized/overly expensive reprints, one or two miniseries from Gaiman and then it'll get passed to Peter David or Bendis & Finch or something.
The whole backstory is covered here by Steve Bissette and is worth a read.
In seeing all of the different DC panels for all of their imprints, it made me realize how much Marvel is blowing it. They’ve got a ton of Marvel Universe material and they seem to ignore the creator-owned Icon branch. There are the Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips books, POWERS by Bendis & Oeming, KABUKI by David Mack and Mark Millar’s KICKASS. That’s it. There should be a whole parade of books and an Icon panel at least at every major convention. It’s hard to take Marvel seriously as an industry leader when it’s all work-for-hire company comics. I’d love to see Jason Aaron get something going there, or Rick Remender or even Jonathan Hickman. It’s a sad use of an imprint. I just reread the first to "Tales of the Corps" issues and they really aren't half bad. They feature short stories based around the various Corps, explaining in part how they work and their limitations. The art is slick (so far by the likes of Gene Ha, Jerry Ordway and Chris Samnee) and the colors are crisp. Some are better than others, but it's a solid bit of background material.MAY091028 BLOODY KISS GN VOL 01 (OF 2) $10.99 DEC080270 CATWOMAN VS BATGIRL STATUE $225.00 MAR094446 CHILDREN OF THE SEA TP VOL 01 $14.99 JUN091137 CIRQUE DU FREAK GN VOL 02 $10.99 MAY090060 CITIZEN REX #1 (OF 6) $3.50 MAY090562 CIVIL WAR HEROES FOR HIRE TP $13.99 MAY090563 CIVIL WAR PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL TP $14.99 MAY090948 COMPLETE CHESTER GOULDS DICK TRACY HC VOL 08 $39.99 FEB094287 COMPLETE CRUMB COMICS SC VOL 09 NEW PTG $19.99 MAR094174 COMPLETE DRACULA #2 (OF 5) $4.99 JUN090892 COMPLETE PEANUTS BOX SET 1971-1974 $49.99 JUN090891 COMPLETE PEANUTS HC VOL 12 1973-1974 $28.99 JUN090746 CROSSED #6 (OF 9) AUXILIARY ED (MR) $3.99 MAY090472 DARK REIGN GOBLIN LEGACY DKR $3.99 MAY090455 DARK REIGN HAWKEYE #4 (OF 5) DKR $3.99 MAY090456 DARK REIGN HOOD #3 (OF 5) DKR $3.99 MAY090457 DARK REIGN LETHAL LEGION #2 (OF 3) DKR $3.99 MAY098103 DARK REIGN SINISTER SPIDER-MAN #1 (OF 4) 2ND PTG VAR $3.99 MAY090461 DARK REIGN SINISTER SPIDER-MAN #2 (OF 4) DKR $3.99 MAY090462 DARK REIGN YOUNG AVENGERS #3 (OF 5) DKR $3.99 MAY090415 DARK TOWER THE FALL OF GILEAD #3 (OF 6) $3.99 MAY090444 DARK X-MEN BEGINNING #2 (OF 3) DAX $3.99 MAY098146 DETECTIVE COMICS #854 2ND PTG $3.99

God, the first Greg Rucka/JH Williams III/Cully Hamner issue was a masterpiece. It's hard to believe it's only been a month - seems like longer. It's a phenomenal comic - the best of the best. Rucka speaks of Kate Kane with real passion and JHW3 delivers on every page. And Hamner's Renee Montoya/Question is Spot On. Perfect. I started reading INVINCIBLE IRON MAN with the first issue of this collection. It's the start of the "Dark Reign" era and one of Tony Stark's most tumultuous times. It's terrific. I mean it. I wish I could stop reading it monthly, but I can't. Matt Fraction and Sal Larroca are killing this. The McDuffie-era ended with a whimper and we're off to a couple months of fill-ins before James Robinson takes over.

MAY090161 JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #29 DC Comics $2.99
Bill Willingham and Matt Sturges' JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA starts here, with a new direction (which is going to split into two books down the line).
I've enjoyed the last couple years of J.S.A. so I'll be checking it out. I think the characters work so well together and the new additions have fit very well. Jesus Marino's "Carlos Pacheco" impression is looking nice, too, which helps the transition.
