UNTIL YOUR HEART STOPS v32.4
by Brian Domingos

Other People’s Lives

December 23rd, 2009

Another month, another set of first issues. I have four varied and different (from each other, at least) from a couple different publishers

Here we go:

DAYTRIPPER #1 (of 10)

Writers/Artists: Gabriel Bá/Fábio Moon
Colors: Dave Stewart
Letters: Sean Konot
Format: Miniseries
Company: Vertigo/DC Comics
$2.99

DAYTRIPPER
is a ten issue story and, as such, it’s hard to take the installments on their own. Brás de Oliva Domingos is an obituary writer who lives in the shadow of his father, Benedito de Oliva Domingos, an author with a revered career that has spanned four decades. Brás has a girlfriend, lives with his dog, Dante and today is his 32nd birthday.

DAYTRIPPER is a story that takes unexpected turns as it explores the life and times of Brás, examining the events and occurrences that made him the man he is today.

It’s a bold story. I was quite shocked by it. Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon have crafted this intricate story using all of their proven talents. They have supplied exquisite artwork for THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, B.P.R.D., CASANOVA, SMOKE & GUNS and this might be the most restrained piece of work they’ve done. It’s grounded in reality and it hangs low. It’s dour yet not brooding – it’s real and it hurts. It’s rare that stories reach me on such an emotional level – maybe it’s the father/son angle, I’m not sure – but if this is how hard they hit coming out of the box, I can’t imagine how rough the next nine issues will be.

Dave Stewart and Sean Konot add lovely colors and letters, respectively. I suspect that Bá and Moon requested their collaborations, after work on THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY and CASANOVA.

I strongly encourage everyone to give this a shot. It feels like the makings of an Important Work, like something people will revere for years to come. We’ll soon lose these two masters to Mutants and Bat-men, this is the time to see just how good they are and why they deserve all the good press.

FORGETLESS #1 (of 4)

Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Scott Forbes (Story A); Marley Zarcone (Story B)
Letters: Johnny Lowe
Format: Miniseries
Company: Image Comics
$3.50

FORGETLESS
comes from Nick Spencer, a new writer who’s sensibilities are modern and on the verge of groundbreaking. The concept is that this famous nightclub in the city called “Forgetless” is closing its doors and everyone wants one more night there.

The book is separated into two different stories, the main one (illustrated by Scott Forbes) where two twittering models, Sonia and Sara, who head back to Forgetless because Sonia’s got a gig. She’s being paid to kill one of the club’s patrons, an accused rapist. (That’s here there, on the cover with the hand cannon.) The story is paced with the “3 hours later”, “10 hours later” type of storytelling, which jumps around a little, but makes sense in the end. The script is a little funny and a little serious and Spencer’s clearly on to something here. Forbes’ artwork is that light, airy type of art that the Luna Bros. only dream of doing. It reminds me of Josh Middleton and Daniel Krall: very stylist, cute and charming.

The second story is a little more tradition in its storytelling: three teenagers from the ‘Burbs decide they are going to be there for the close of Forgetless but they need fake IDs first. Some quick (yet harsh) thinking by the ringleader, Darla, and they’ve got cash in hand and they are on their way. It’s like one of those smart teen dramadies (JUNO, etc.) with its quick wit and snappy dialogue. The art by Marley Zarcone is drastically different from Forbes, but it’s a totally different kind of story so it firs the tone perfectly. It’s color flats (which, in this day and age of over-rendered computer colors, is refreshing) line work in the that looks a little like Nick Dragotta inked by Becky Cloonan. It’s a nice look.

The only criticism I have for the book is some lack of follow through in the design and prep of the book. The Flickr title page looks great and the twitter designs work in the story but I wish Spencer had actually gone and created the twitter accounts for Sonia and Sara because that always gives some fun context. Other than that, it’s really well done.

Overall, I was very impressed with the first issue and I’ll be picking up the rest of the issues. Nice job, folks.

INCORRUPTABLE #1

Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Jean Diaz (p), Belardino Brabo (i)
Colors: Andrew Dalhouse
Letters: Ed Dukeshire
Format: Miniseries
Company: Boom! Studios
$3.99

200
Mark Waid showed the dark side of super heroics in IRREDEEMABLE where the Earth’s most powerful hero, The Plutonian, went bad. With INCORRUPTABLE, Waid shows how the toughest badass on the planet, a villain who can physically go toe-to-toe with The Plutonian, Max Damage, decides to flip, too, from bad to good.

By the end of the first issue here, he’s taken out his own crew, laid out his intentions with the police and torched 4.2 million in “tainted” bills. It’s one of those “if he can’t be good, what chance do any of us have?” kinds of stories which will likely have Damage cleaning up the Plutonian’s messes and probably kicking some ass along the line.

Neil Edwards, who recently drew some of the JSA 80-PAGE GIANT and some upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR, was slated to add his photo-realistic style (a la Bryan Hitch) to the book, but I’m guessing that the those other gigs paid better. The art by Jean Diaz and Belardino Brabo is nothing special, but it has some nice moments. The splash-reveal of Damage on page 7 is particularly good, but it’s much like the average Avatar-type style.

The big problem that happens with these types of stories is the logistical issues but this all makes sense, making it a success. Damage is on the verge of becoming “Max Daring” and will save the world. Boom! Studios puts out a wide range of books and this is one of the better new starts.

JSA ALL-STARS #1

Writer: Matt Sturges
Artist: Freddie Williams II
Colors: The Hories
Letters: Pat Brosseau
Format: Ongoing
Company: DC Comics
$2.99

With Geoff Johns having become the definitive writer of the Justice Society of America over the last decade, the new creative team of Bill Willingham and Matt Sturges had some huge shoes to fill. The cast of two dozen made for some complicated scripting issues and their opening arc suffered from the mass of characters. The decision was to split the team into two groups with Sturges taking a bulk of the rookies and some veterans off into their own book.

JSA ALL-STARS is the result and, after one issue, it’s working pretty well. Hourman, Powergirl and Magog are going to train the rest of the new guys (Damage, Cyclone, Wildcat III, Judomaster, Citizen Steel and King Chimera) to be better heroes. It’s a pretty basic story set up but it works here because there is a real need for the team split. The plot spins out of the Willingham/Sturges arc of JSA where a ton of villains attack the JSA’s headquarters to capture Stargirl. It’s got a hefty dose of action and some important character work.

Sturges has a firm grasp on the characters, which is important and he’s included Hourman I, Rex Tyler as a sort of tech-advisor/elder statesman for the team, which is a nice touch.

Freddie Williams II’s art is intricate and generally well produced. He’s all digital these days, with background and layered figures (like digital colorforms) so images with large groups of people can look a bit odd (the opening two-page spread, for one) but, for the most part, it looks good. He’s a consistent artist, which is always appreciated. For some strange reason, it seems like he and Sturges have a really strong rapport, which will work in the long run.

At this point, I’d rather read JSA ALL-STARS than the main book and, if they continue with this quality, it’s possible that it could take over the franchise all together.
It’s pretty common knowledge at this point, but a reminder: for the first time in 10+ years, there will be no new comics next week due to Christmas and New Years.

Your Local Comics Shop will have copies of BLACKEST NIGHT #6 available, to get you in the shop on the 30th, but that’s about it. Maybe they’ll have sales/incentives for you, who knows? It’ll be weird to not have new new comics to read but I’ve got a big reading pile (LUNA PARK, THE WINTERMEN, VIXEN, THE ROCKETEER, etc.) so I’ll be fine.

The BLACK NIGHT: SUPERMAN creative team of James Robinson & Eddy Barrows start the sixth and final BLACKEST NIGHT miniseries, BN: J.S.A.. The previous miniseries have been pretty decent and this brings the heroes from the Golden Age into the fold with the major story. We've seen a little bit of the Justice Society in the main book (none of it being particularly good for the team, Damage, specifically) and I'm guessing Robinson will flesh out that story. He's got a long history with the group so I'm looking forward to a good read here.

OCT090645 BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS: 10 YEARS AT MARVEL TPB
Marvel Comics
$34.99

Bendis has sold a shit-load of comics for Marvel over the years, so it makes sense that they'd want to celebrate his 10 years with the company with something noteworthy. The problem is that the comics collected here are not all that good.

There are some special ones, like ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #13 which was Bendis and Mark Bagley's issue where the young Peter Parker spills his secret to his love, Mary Jane. It's a single issue that does its job well with character beats and solid artwork. It's not an event or a major cliffhanger, just Peter opening up his life to MJ and it's sweet. That makes sense. Or the ULTIMATE MARVEL TEAM-UP #9, that Bendis did with Jim Mahfood, where Peter meets the Fantastic Four for the first time; that is a self-contained with great jokes and fun artwork. Nothing special, just a nice, stress-free romp. Or even the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN SUPER SPECIAL which was Bendis and 2+ dozen artists, exploring different parts of the new "Ultimate" universe. It had some cool bits like Mike Avon Oeming's Ult. Captain America, which was something totally new at the time. Even ALIAS #10 was Bendis, Michael Gaydos and David Mack's J. Jonah Jameson issue that seemed fresh and new in comics. This was back when Bendis was doing new stuff and bringing the indie-sensibilities to the mainstream books and characters. The rest, though, is pretty weak: you've got three issues of the AVENGERS (1 "Dark", 2 "New"), a pointless CIVIL WAR tie in, a not-as-good-as-the-rest DAREDEVIL issue, a close-but-not-as-good-as-the-other ULT. SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL and an issue of ULT. X-MEN that isn't as good as people say it is. It's a majorly missed opportunity. Much like most of Bendis' books: it's a lotta filler, which is a shame. Why wouldn't they do something like collect the first issues of all of his major runs? A Bendis celebratory sampler? That would have made more sense in the long run. This just seems dated already. I mean, that DARK AVENGERS issue came out three months ago and was not even anything special then.

Marvel Comics
$99.99

The second half of the Bendis/Alex Maleev run on isn't as good as the first half, but there are some great moments here. It starts after Matt Murdock was unmasked and declared himself the Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen. It opens with "The Widow" (which is excellent) then there's "Golden Age" and "Decalogue" which aren't as solid. The final arc, "The Murdock Papers" wraps the whole thing as strong as it all began. Based on this work alone, Bendis and Maleev are one of the best teams in the modern era. Also included is "What if Karen Page Had Lived" by Bendis and Michael Lark and the three issue Spider-man/Punisher/Daredevil story from ULT. MARVEL TEAM-UP by Bendis and Bill Sienkiewicz.

The second arc of Greg Rucka and J. H. Williams III's DETECTIVE COMICS wraps up the origins of Kathy Kane life as Batwoman. Last issue ended with a brief yet eye-opening run in she had with Batman, so that likely has something to do with it. Rucka has crafted an unforgettable character here and is truly giving her the respect she deserves. And JHW, I mean, it doesn't get much better than him. Elsewhere in the co-feature (Rucka & Cully Hamner), the second part of The Question story continues, with a team up between Renee and the Huntress.

I reviewed the first issue a couple of weeks ago: the story is completely art-driven, which doesn't result in the best story. The art looks nice, sometimes, but the coloring is largely bad. Here's a bonus: Liefeld is including a bonus BLOODSTRIKE back-up story... as if anyone is looking for that.

Well well well, we see the remaining members of The Paradigm collapsing, the evil genius pulls off his secret scheme and the US Government sets its plan into action. Lots of unexpected "holy crap" moments, which I've come to expect with IRREDEEMABLE.

As I said above, I'm not really enjoying the Bill Willingham era of J.S.A., but, with the team getting smaller, it might be a matter of time for the characters and plot to get back into the swing of things.

I'm really interested in reading the three oversized issues from Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini's LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME. With all of the genre he's worked, I don't think I've seen a Remender crime story yet. Tocchini's art is either gorgeous or hideous (based on the ION series). The preview pages look good, though, so we'll see.

DC Comics
$17.99

I liked the first issues of THE MIGHTY from Peter Tomasi, Keith Champagne and Peter Snejbjerg but the story seemed to be going in the Expected Direction so I stopped picking it up. It's the story of Adam-1, the world's only superhero and he might have gone bad and there's some mystery and suspense involved. Sounds a lot like IRREDEEMABLE. But it is a different book and Snejbjerg is a much better artist. It’s canceled as of #12 so I might check out the collections. It’s on the list.

I wasn't blown away by the first issue of the third volume of POWERS but I'm still going to be reading it. I liked that it's dealing with a different aspect of Christian's past - specifically, his time as a freedom fighter in World War II. I like that, but I love the crime stuff, so I hope they don't stray too far. And also: where’s Deena? Thanks!

OCT090216 SUPERMAN #695
DC Comics
$2.99

I'm trying to stay interested in SUPERMAN, reading the book for a year without even having Superman in the book, but I'm having trouble with the artwork. For some reason, the good, reliable artists have gotten gigs elsewhere and we're stuck here with a bunch of newbies that don't quite have the chops. Bernard Chang, not a newbie, starts here, and that's good because I've liked his work before, but man, I don't mind reading about Mon-El, but if I can't get some Superman as well, can I at least get some consistent art?

OCT090275 WILDCATS: WORLD’S END #18
Wildstorm/DC Comics
$2.99

This is Christos Gage's last issue of WILDCATS and final issue in the Wildstorm Universe for the foreseeable future. I mean, let's see: we've got 18 issues of WILDCATS: World's End, 10 or so four-then-two page back-ups, 12 issues if STORMWATCH: P.H.D., 6 issues of "Armageddon", 6 issues of WILDSTORM REVELATIONS and we're looking at 50 or so comics. He's contributed a sizable swath of the blanket that makes up the WSU's continuity. That's something special, these days, especially considering the line of books is largely ignored. Shawn Moll and inker Drew Geraci's art on his final arc has been great. I'm ready for it all to end, just so I can see what's next.

The new era of the Wildstorm Universe begins in two weeks.
