IN THE MAINSTREAM - PART 2 - Pindaros explains why the problem

EDDIES
IN THE MAINSTREAM - PART 1: COMICS AND THE PULPS - Controversial
staff writer Pindaros returns. "Call it THE COMICS JOURNAL vs. WIZARD;
I’m sure you know the argument I mean. A good comics story should be 'fun,'
i.e., just like the other comics stories you’ve read but with new situations
for your favorite characters and new characters to fall in love with. On
the other side, the Eisner solution: a good comics story is one which can
find its place in the canon of great works of art and literature, by which
one means the European tradition running from the Renaissance to Picasso
and Joyce."
08/01/00:
The
Place of Comics in the Western Artistic Tradition - This essay
by UCLA professor Albert Boime attempts to lay to rest the academic concerns
of comic art's status within the larger realm of visual arts. A very comprehensive
piece, the comic medium is explored through several historical and critical
avenues, making for some very engrossing reading. Quite possibly the "smartest"
article we've ever run, and something that fans of Scott McCloud and Understanding/Reinventing
Comics should take a look at.
08/01/00:
The
Eisner Process - This year's Eisner Awards, the industry's most
prestigious comics awards, have come and gone, with Alan Moore pretty much
mopping the floor with everyone. But not many people know how exactly the
Eisner Awards go from nominations to attractive plaques. PopImage Staff
Writer Francis Lord talks to Awards administrator Jackie Estrada about
the Awards Process.
