SOUNDTRAX:
SHIP OF FOOLS
by
Michael Avon Oeming.
Each
month, PopImage will ask a different comic book creator or fan
to share with us their fantasy soundtrack for the comic book story
of their choice. This month, Mike Avon Oeming (POWERS, BULLETPROOF
MONK) shares with us the soundtrack for his and Bryan J.L.
Glass' SHIP OF FOOLS You can also check out recommended
listening from writer John Arcudi (MAJOR BUMMER, FLINCH, BATMAN:
BLACK & WHITE).
SHIP
OF FOOLS, done with Bryan J.L. Glass is full of music. It
was a song that inspired a lot of the book to begin with and each
issue started with a quote from a song that reflected the story.
"Prologue"
by ELO-The whole CD by ELO called "Time" is almost a full soundtrack
to SOH. This was used at the beginning and end of SOH. The lyrics
'I have a message from another time...' are the perfect bookend
for the series.
"Ring
of Fire" by Johnny Cash-In the first issue, the characters are
falling into madness looking for a way out. By issue two, they're
being pursued. Out of the frying pan and into the fire...
"You
May Be Right" by Billy Joel-The lyrics again, say it all for the
Fools. "You may be right, I may be crazy, but it just may be a
lunatic you're looking for."
"Send
in the Clowns" by Stephen Sondheim-Well, we have killer clowns
in SOH. Never mind, they're there!
"Five
to One" by the Doors-I'm a big Doors fan, so I put them anywhere
I can. Great song, a rebel song, us against them. "Five to one,
one to five, no one here gets out alive." That's the Fools.
"Mama
May Have" by Laura Nyro-I'm not sure if this is the title, but
the soulful words, "Mama may have, Poppa may have, but god bless
the child, that's got its own". The words are the basis for the
relationship between Mala and Mama. Gotta love it.
