PopRocks: BLUE MONDAY TPB
by Chynna Clugston-Major
A
friend of mine recently said if I'm anything, I'm predictable. This
is absolutely true. This soundtrack is not going to surprise you
if you know the comic and the music, or me for that matter. Most
of these are the songs that were going through my head when I was
in school, and are the same songs going through my head when mentally
I have to go back there. It wasn't a long time ago, but things have
definitely changed since then, and it was essential to surround
myself with these tunes to get that fifteen year old feeling back.
These are also some of my favorite songs ever, a few of which helped
me further develop the characters in ways I couldn't even explain.
I put as many on the soundtrack as I typically fit on the tons of
mix tapes I made in school for friends...you know, back in the day
when people never even heard of a CD burner, and were impressed
if you could actually play a CD in your car. Yeah.
1)
Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)-Icicle Works: It sounded like
a proper beginning to a film, some sort of 80's teen flick. It's
just another cool song that represents to me the essence of being
young and struggling to understand all the retarded ass things happening
around you.
2)
Love Plus One- Haircut 100: This one has always been a favorite,
plus the video just about made me shit myself laughing with all
the Tarzan crap. I love Haircut 100, and their music totally fits
BM. Plus the lead singer looks a bit like Alan, which I think is
funny.
3)
King for a Day- Thompson Twins: This is just a really sweet
song I want to stick in the series somewhere. It seems so damn innocent
and optimistic, something that is very much like the lead characters'
personalities.
4)
Tainted Love (full version)- Soft Cell: You have to, have to,
have to have the full version because the 'baby where did our love
go?' part is so cool. This is just something you'd find the kids
singing together when they get bored walking home from school, or
if there's ever an awkward silence at the Tree where no one can
think of what to say, or who to make fun of. (Or in the case of
#1, when the boys were pissed and not speaking to the girls after
the TP session.)
5)
Our Lips are Sealed- Fun Boy Three: Since the weird students
get the most shit (duh), I thought this would represent that whole
issue nicely. For the most part they keep their exploits to themselves
and let the idiots that hate them say whatever, since there's no
point in trying to look good to a bunch of meatheads.
6)
The Only One I Know- The Charlatans: Another appropriate song
for the times. It sounds frustrated to me, and between Alan and
Victor's confusion on what their true feelings are for whatever
girl they dig, and Bleu's new fascination with a man twice her age
(not to mention all the other emotional business going on in that
group,) I felt it needed to be on this list. It has the right sound
for them, and is something they'd regularly hear on the radio at
that time.
7)
To The End- Blur: The most wonderful thing I ever saw was years
ago when a very sexy, sweaty (did I mention sexy?) Damon Albarn
crooned sweetly to a swaying crowd at the Palace in Hollywood with
thousands of flecks of light dancing over everything from a huge
disco ball suspended above us. This was what he was singing, and
I thought it was perfect for a BM dream sequence (even though it
came out in the mid 90's as opposed to the early.) (Sigh, whatta
band!)
8)
Best Friend- The (English) Beat: The Beat (and ska in general,
2-Tone in particular) has the right kind of happy, hyper sound that
totally represents the characters in their most typical prank-pulling,
childishly flirtatious moments. This makes me think of all the tampon/toilet
paper/egg tossing and porn swiping business that goes on in number
one.
9)
Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah!)-Gary Glitter: The characters
are so completely driven by their hormones, that every time I thought
about the sexual tension between all of them this song always came
to mind. It just says hurry up and shag me already, and I
love it.
10)
Try This For Sighs- Adam Ant: Epitomizes Bleu and Alan's relationship,
a continuing uphill battle that'll be further explored shortly...
11)
Substitute- Blur (Or the Who): I originally chose Blur's version
of this to fit a particular scene in the second book that needed
to be fast paced and lighthearted. Of course Blur's Substitute is
not necessarily easy to find, and apparently the band hates it as
I was told (I don't see why, it's sloppy and funny, I just love
the idea of them completely drunk and playing Who covers- it's so
Keef!) ...so even though I was keeping the Who's version for the
second series, it will do just as well here.
12)
Carnation- The Jam: A nicely depressing song...I think it's
really a gorgeous tune, and suits the more morose moments in the
series with its sense of loneliness.
13)
I Wanna Be Adored- The Stone Roses: This represents Bleu the
best overall when it comes right down to it. What she really wants
out of life is to be loved (who doesn't), and by a lot of people.
It feels like a song for the romantic and the dreamer, and that's
her in a nutshell.
14)
No New Tale to Tell- Love and Rockets: This is just a great
song that reeks of a kind of desperate passion that I like to find
in music; it's another that just had to be in here since it was
such an important song to me at their age.
15)
Compulsion- Martin Gore: To me this was the beginning of a typical
day at school, when you're feeling a bit listless, hoping something
exciting would happen soon and knowing that's not very likely. It
fits any of the characters when they are feeling separate from the
masses, and even each other.
16)
Stand and Deliver- Adam Ant: Out of all his songs I thought
this would be the most fun to do Karaoke style. It has so much energy,
and the lyrics are so great. I immediately had a picture of Bleu
really getting into singing this even though she's no Whitney, voice-wise...
when she hears Adam she's in her own little world.
17)
Waterloo Sunset- The Kinks: The music itself sounds incredibly
sad and beaten to me, so it fit right in where Bleu discovers she'd
missed Adam Ant's entire performance and wouldn't have the chance
to meet him at all. It just gave me that horrible sinking feeling
I imagine I'd feel if I missed out on something that I held on the
top of my must do this lifetime list.
18)
The Kids are Alright- The Who: Not much needs to be said about
this one!
19)
Loaded (Farley Mix preferred)- Primal Scream: This I feel is
Clover's theme song...the use of the fiddle probably helped me decide
that, being it's involvement with Irish folk music and all, but
it also talks of a special kind of purity that most characters overlook
in Clover. She's undyingly loyal to her true friends and deep down
is a big softie, though no one realizes it completely. Of anyone
in the book she's probably the least flawed, violent tendencies
and all.
20)
Blue Monday (original version)- New Order: Nothing beats the
original, what can I say?
