NEWS: BEYOND THE PANELS IN
NEW YORK CITY - New Assistant Editor Ed Mathews brings us a
first-hand report from the recent BEYOND THE PANELS event in New York City.
11/14/00: WELCOME
TO NOVEMBER - by Editor In Chief, Christopher Butcher.
10/10/00: WELCOME
TO POPIMAGE OCTOBER - "I have been thinking about the rather...
critical tone my comments have taken over the past few weeks, and I wanted
to take a moment and do a little positive activism. I am going to
list for you five comics that I am enjoying the hell out of, and why, and
I'm going to tell you to go buy them. I have no vested interest in any
of these books, I'm not angling for a job colouring any of them (though
I wouldn't turn one down…), and I think that with all the bitching I do
about crappy books, companies, and people, the least I can provide is an
alternative..."
09/06/00: LETTER
FROM THE EDITOR - "Marvel
Comics isn't really where my head's at these days. This is a good move
for Marvel, but it's a horrible move for Joe Quesada, and creators rights
and the rest of the comic industry. I mean, I really want to believe that
Joe will change things from the top down, for the better, but... really.
Name one creator who's worked at Marvel who hasn't been screwed at least
once in the last 10 years, from stealing their creations and leaving them
destitute down to being asked to return paychecks.

ACTIVISM
01/11/01:
UPFRONT:
KID AT HEART - As PopImage strives to reach a number of different
comics audiences, we're proud to present the first of an ongoing series
relating to young readers and comic books by Brian Clopper. Brian has been
working at a grassroots level to promote comics to young readers for a
number of years, and has a special insight into the subject as a 5th grade
teacher in Maryland. PopImage welcomes Brian (or Mr. Clopper as he's known
to his students) to the site, and we hope that you enjoy and are informed
by his series of articles.
11/14/00: UPFRONT:
ACTIVISM: COMICS 4 KIDS - Support the charity that supports
comics for sick kids. This year PopImage wants you to do something different
with your comics, give them away. That's right, give them away. Not as
presents or in exchange for sexual favors, but rather, give them to children.
10/17/00: ACTIVISM:
PROMOTING GRAPHIC NOVELS THROUGH ACTION - So you rushed out
and used every appropriate technique to explain to your friends, coworkers,
teachers why they should be reading Maison Ikkoku. What else can you do?
Well, you can read this new column for starters. This month, D. Aviva Rothschild
gives you suggestions about steps you can take to increase and encourage
public awareness of graphic novels.
09/12/00: UPFRONT:

COLUMNS - Paul T. Riddell
02/22/01:
COLUMN: LYDON'S LAMENT-
Paul T. Riddell returns with the second part of CONSPIRACY OF ONE. Looking
to break into the comic business? You really need to be reading this column.
01/05/01: UPFRONT:
LYDON'S LAMENT - So you want to break into comics? If thoughts
of the international Vatican conspiracy to keep you out of comics permeate
your brain, you should really read part one of Paul T. Riddell's CONSPIRACY
OF ONE.
11/14/00: UPFRONT:
LYDON'S LAMENT -
"A Sociological Homage To Rob Liefeld (With A Tip of the Hat To Stephen
Jay Gould)." One of the grand joys of the pursuit of abstract knowledge
comes from running across unrelated facts and realizing that they all tie
together somehow. By Paul T. Riddell.
10/10/00: UPFRONT:
"ON THE MERITS OF THE DAY JOB" -
It's
the most familiar mantra in the comics industry, at least among the beginners
and the wannabes. You know the one: "Man, if I didn't have this day job,
the work I'd put out!" PopImage is proud to introduce new regular columnist
Paul T. Riddel.
COLUMNS: From our talented Contributors
03/01/01: COLUMN:
T. CASEY BRENNAN'S JACKIE OF THE OLD PLACES. - PopImage is proud
to present the first of a new series of columns by T. Casey Brennan. "...this
is the story of how I sold my soul to the devil in 1958; my mother wrote
gothic novels and was a little crazy..."
10/24/00: COMMENT:
OFF THE BEATEN PATH - "Comics
are a living, breathing medium. They are flexible and adaptive, able to
pounce on anything from the latest computer coloring techniques to whatever
happens to be the current hip trend....So why do we, as an industry, continue
to sit around treading water while the rest of the world races by like
Olympic swimmers? What I find staggering is the fact that our industry
contains and embraces some of the most intellectual, forward-thinking creators
of any medium, and yet, we are continually crippled by the demands of an
outdated and ultimately irrelevant history." By Gabe Chouinard.
09/06/00: UPFRONT:
COLUMN- ALL OVER THE WORLD - Regular columnist JAn returns for
his second month with a rather insightful look at Warren Ellis' PLANETARY,
told in a fictional first person narrative. Or is it?

sense of the various manifestos you may have encountered. Can't figure
out the New Vanguard of the Old Bastards' New Rage? Start here.
08/01/00: COLUMN:
How I Learned to Love JLA - JAn Napiorkowski parry's and thrusts
his way through Grant Morisson's JLA.
06/20/00: UPFRONT:
Industrial Dogma - In Second Sight, Upfront editor Joe Szilagyi
compares the marketing strategy (or lack thereof) of the comics industry
to politics, plus the computer software and tobacco industries.
