080100: Letter From The Editor
July? I know no July...

Welcome to August. What? You're asking about July? Yeah, about that. You see, there was my birthday on the 5th (Happy Birthday, me!). That was fun. Then we had a bunch of people who were frantically preparing for the San Diego comic-con, including the majority of our staff and contributors. It left very, very little time to prepare PopImage.

So, we… didn't. Yeah, pretty lame I know, I'm sorry. I'm trying to ensure that never happens again though. I'd like to thank the many, many people who stopped by in July despite the lack of updates. That was very cool, and it kept us inspired and motivated for the big August update.

And what a month we've got for you! For the first three weeks, we've got all of your favorite PopImage articles. Interviews, features, reviews, the whole nine yards. Then, in week four we've got our Scott McCloud ProFile, which will actually double as an examination and discussion of Scott's new book, Reinventing Comics. Finally, August is a five week month, so we're preparing a special "Skip Week Event" for you all. I'm gonna keep this under my hat for now, but it's very cool, very important, and ties in directly with our coverage of reinventing comics. You'll hear more about it in coming weeks.

That's it for PopImage this month, though I would like to take a moment say hello to some of the newer sites that have sprung up, or are going to be showing up over the next little while. Former PopImage editor Arni Gunnarsson, along with PI contributor Mal Jones, is putting together NextComics.com (www.nextcomics.com), an online comics repositiory. I've heard about some of the talent they're lining up and the site sounds like it's going to be cool. Several other former PI Staffers have also struck out on their own and created The Ninth Art (www.ninthart.com) which promises to be a rather interesting magazine dedicated to exploring comics as a serious artform. Finally, from the ashes of Reactor comes OPI8 (www.opi8.com), Chad Riden's new comics/journalism/"spooky" culture site.

What's most intresting about these developments, to me, is that though they all combine elements of what we're doing here at PI, each one has gone off in their own direction to put their sites together in their own way. Or at least plan to. I think it speaks to a larger movement towards change and experimentation in the comics industry, and I think that we're all going to do so very good, very noticable things over the next while.

Anyhow, enjoy the site this month, and be sure to send us mail for our Letters column.

Take Care,

- Christopher Butcher
