Previews Review
By Scottie Grunewald...
It's time once again kiddies. Time to assume the position, on your knees, head up, and minds open, ready to receive my PREVIEWS instructions for July. Sure, doing everything I say may make you feel like less of a man (Or more of a woman) but if you do as I say, I promise I won't give you the wet spot.

THE LAST TEMPTATION Trade paperback - Neil Gaiman & Michael Zulli
This is a no-brainer people. Buy it. [Editor's note: The opinions expressed by Scott Grunewald are not necessarily those of the rest of the editorial staff. Some of us have better taste than this. Yeah, we all love Neil Gaiman, but I liked this better when I got it in colour, for less money. And even then I didn't like it.]
$9.95 - 104pages - Sepia (brown) on Cream - Page 29 - Order number AUG000013

ROBIN: YEAR ONE #1 of 4 - By Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty, Javier Pulido, & Robert Campanella
On his worst day, Chuck Dixon writes your basic cut and paste superhero comics. Not bad, but not particularly innovative either. And let's face it that's exactly what he's paid for. But sometimes while reading his comics I sense a desire to break loose and really turn action comics on their ear. Witness his unconventional and exciting BIRDS OF PREY, or his recent MARVEL KNIGHTS. ROBIN: YEAR ONE smells like one of his fun projects to me, and the art looks fantastic. I'd bet money on this being one of Dixons winners, so should you.
$4.95 - 48pages - full color - Page 81 - Order number AUG000432

STATIC SHOCK: TRIAL BY FIRE Trade paperback - By Dwayne McDuffie, Robert L Washington III, John Paul Leon, Denys Cowan, Steve Mitchell & Shawn Martinbrough
Milestone was one of the bright spots in the otherwise tepid comic environment of the early 90's. Sadly, like too many other wonderful comic projects, it was largely ignored buy a comic buying public obsessed with the latest die cut, foil embossed covers. STATIC is being made into an animated show on Kids WB, and personally I can't wait to see it. STATIC was a fun and thoroughly enjoyable comic that could easily be compared to the humor and fun of early SPIDER-MAN comics. Even today STATIC is an unconventional and fun comic, and should be a must read for someone who thinks superhero comics are lacking in such traits.
$9.95 - 104 pages - full color - Page 87 - Order number AUG000474

PREACHER: DEAD OR ALIVE - By Garth Ennis & Glen Fabry
A hardcover collection of every PREACHER cover painted by the uber talented Glen Fabry and running commentary by the man himself, Garth Ennis? Sign me up. Even better, this book includes tons of new paintings and unused artwork by Fabry. Fabry is one of the best cover artists working today, and his PREACHER covers have specifically raised the bar on cover art.
Hardcover: $29.95 - 192 pages - full colour - Page 95 - Order nuber AUG000507

KABUKI: METAMORPHOSIS Hardcover - By David Mack
Some people say that KABUKI is slow, plodding and just pictures of half-naked Japanese girls in their underwear. I can't help but agree, but there is a method to Mack's madness. KABUKI is inventive, fascinating, and unendingly beautiful. And for a book as gorgeous as this, a hardcover is the perfect format. If you haven't read KABUKI, this is a great place to start.
Regular Hardcover: $49.95 - 280pages - full color - Page 127 - Order number AUG001186
Signed and Numbered Hardcover, with tip-in original art: $79.95 - 280pages - full color - Page 127 - Order number AUG001186

TORSO: The Definitive Collection - By Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko
One of the absolute coolest comics to come out last year, TORSO is the story of Elliot Ness and his search for the USA's first documented serial killer. If you're new to Bendis, or only know of his recent superhero work, then this is a fantastic place to start getting to know his more realistic crime comics.
Trade Paperback: $24.95 - 280pages - B&W - Page 129 - Order number AUG001189
Hardcover (Signed and numbered limited edition): $49.95 - 280pages - B&W - Page 129 - Order number AUG001190

SAM AND TWITCH #15 - By Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev
Yes, more Bendis books to push, and no, he isn't paying me to plug him (hee hee). SAM AND TWITCH is a fun, and completely non-Spawm related crime drama. But the real draws to this book, are the series' new artist Alex Maleev, and an appearance by Bendis' classic crime character Jinx from his books of the same name. This is also a great place for new readers to pick up the series. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

GEEK ALERT! GEEK ALERT!

ELEKTRA: ASSASSIN Trade paperback - By Frank Miller & Bill Sienkiewicz
Finally, after far too many years being out of print, Millers classic ELEKTA: ASSASSIN is back! This is one of comics classic tales, and for me at least, rivals that of Millers more popular DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.
$24.95 - 264pages - full color - Page 163 - Order number AUG001444

NICK FURY: SCORPIO - By Jim Steranko
Following the super cool release of the original S.H.I.E.L.D. stories that made Jim Steranko a comic legend, Marvel smartly re-releases the first issues of the on-going NICK FURY: AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. series. Steranko was/is a revolutionary artist and reading his old works in like watching comics change from a childish pass time into a fun and adult art form.
$14.95 - 96pages - full color - Page 163 - Order number AUG001446

DAREDEVIL: NINJA #1 OF 3 - By Brian Michael Bendis & Rob Haynes
This is the last Bendis book that I'll push this month, I swear. For those not in the know, DAREDEVIL: NINJA is a tale of martial arts adventure, taking Daredevil to Japan to fight ninjas! Watch as Bendis works out his Jet Li jones through the fantastic art of Rob Hanes, who was responsible for the fill-in artwork on Daredevil #12.
$2.99 - 32pages - full color - Page 164 - Order number AUG001448

ASTRONAUTS IN TROUBLE: ONE-SHOT, ONE BEER - By Larry Young & Charlie Adlard
If you have yet to experience the force of nature that is Larry Young and his tales of Astronauts in mortal peril, then do yourself a favor and plug in. Another good reason to buy this book is because the brave and noble Mr. Young has decided to do something revolutionary. He's dumping the single-issue format, and is publishing full length stories in trade paperback form. Not only is this a smart business decision on Larry's part, it's a something that more publishers should be considering. The direct market is not what it used to be, and the industry needs to find ways to grow into other markets, like bookstores. Buy this comic, enjoy it, and support Larry and his bold new move.
$7.95 - 72pages - B&W - Page 194 - Order number AUG001663

FEAR OF COMICS - By Gilbert Hernandez
Indy comic legend Gilbert Hernandez finally releases a collection of his NEW LOVE mini series that as well as featuring the continuing adventures of his top heavy heroine Luba, the book also features some of his more abstract works.
$12.95 - 120pages - B&W - Page 254 - Order number AUG001943

LOCAS IN LOVE - By Jaime Hernandez
And now the Hernandez flip side. Whereas Gilbert's art drifts into abstract places, its Jaime's story telling that's hard to nail down. Funny, touching, and affecting, the continuing story of Maggie and Hopey is never boring, and always engrossing. Sometimes it's hard to believe that comics can get this good. Buy!
$14.95 - 120 pages - B&W & full color - Page 256 - Order number AUG001944

SCARY GODMOTHER VOLUME #4: THE BOO FLU - By Jill Thompson
Kids, adults, comic geeks, everyone who reads SCARY GODMOTHER loves it, so why aren't you reading it? Do I have to get out the belt?
$19.95 - 48pages - full color - Page 280 - Order number AUG002079

$29.95 - Rated R - Page 368 - Order number AUG002713

TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE DVD
You know you loved this movie as much as I did, and you know you're just as excited that it's coming out on DVD. Extra's include 5.1 audio and a gallery of original storyboard art. Buy it and geek out along with me.
$19.95 - NR - Page 371 - Order number AUG002753

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY?!?!?
INSANE CLOWN POSSE 9-INCH ACTION FIGURES
I ask again, why? At least the figures are true to life, they look exactly like the real ICP, two fat, smelly white guys with an unhealthy KISS hard-on.
$19.99 each (You can choose from Shaggy 2 Dope or Violent J! Joy!) Page 399 - I'm not going to look up this order number for you goddamnit!

THE SAD, VIRGINAL SHUT-IN PURCHASE OF THE MONTH!
PLAYBOY PLAYMATE OCTOBER DIE-CAST CAR (Previews exclusive!)
I'm going to keep this short and sweet. If you spend 10 bucks on a little toy car with pictures of a naked chick on it, then you seriously need to end your life. That's just sad.
$9.49 - The chick isn't nude on the car dofus - page 388 - Order number yadda yadda yadda, look it up yourself pervo...
Why do I always get depressed when i get near the end of my issue of PREVIEWS? Sigh.
Okay my little human blow-up dolls, we're done with your lesson for today. Now take what you learned, go to your local comic store and PRE-ORDER YOU FUCKING COMICS AS INSTRUCTED!
*smooches*
