090600: Previews Review
By Scott J. Grunewald.
It’s time my little chew toys. Another month starts off with the release of Diamond Comics Previews catalogue soliciting comics and comic related items for release in November. So gather ‘round children, and tweak my Information Nipples like good little boys and girls.
AKIRA BOOK 1 Trade paperback – By Katsuhiro Otomo
I have to admit that I'm a tad new to the AKIRA comic, but I'm a huge fan of the Anime. Based on that, and the tremendous art that I’ve seen from an old ratty Japanese version I was given by a friend, I'm there.
$24.95 - 364pages – B&W - Page 36 - Order number SEP000030
CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTH Trade paperback - By Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Dick Giordano, Mike DeCarlo & Jerry Ordway

Hey, does anyone else remember that $100.00 definitive CRISIS collection that came out last year that everyone simply HAD to buy because it was the only way fans would get a complete collection? Well guess what... [Editor's Note: DC Comics said that conventional trade paperback binding wouldn't hold Crisis because it had too many pages. DC Comics said that Crisis would never come out in Trade Paperback, and the only way to buy it would be in an expensive Hardcover Edition. DC Comics lied.]
$24.95 - 368pages - Full color – Page 87 - Order number SEP000497
JLA: A LEAGUE OF ONE Hardcover - By Christopher Moeller
This is the second deluxe JLA hard cover, and it looks to be as cool as the last, JLA: EARTH 2. Christopher Moeller is of course the uber talented creator of SHIVA’S WAR, a mad, insane sci-fi epic on the level of THE METABARONS. If you’ve never seen Moeller’s stunning, fully painted artwork, then this is the perfect place to get to know him. In an age dominated by Alex "snooze" Ross, his lush and detailed paintings are a reminder of how comics really can be pieces of art.
$24.95 - 112pages - Full color painted artwork - Page 89 - Order number SEP000510
THE AUTHORITY #21 - By Doselle Young, John McCrea & Garry Leach
The regular ass kicking creative team of Millar and Quitely take a bit of a breather to let the creators of the upcoming spin-off series THE MONARCHY take a stab at blowing things up. From everything I’ve heard, the spin-off is going to rock, and rather than commit to buying a book sight unseen, this single issue interlude lets me decide if the book is going to be any good. This is a must order for any AUTHORITY fan, if only to try Mr. Young out.
$2.50 - 32pages - Full Color - Page 91 - Order number SEP000529
THE AUTHORITY: UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT Trade paperback - By Warren Ellis, Mark Millar, Bryan Hitch, Frank Quitely, Paul Neary & Trevor Scott
THE AUTHORITY is just one of those books that we’ll all be talking about years from now. When we’re old comic geeks, sitting in our dens watching the flying cars jet by our floating houses, we’ll say things like "Remember when Ellis and Millar destroyed every convention that superheroes had run into the ground? Didn’t that rock?" THE AUTHORITY will change the way superhero comics are done, for good or bad, it’s already happening. Buy the trades. Keep them. Display them, and proudly scream "does this look like a comic for kids you bastards?!" [Editor's Note: This took entirely too long to come out, considering the intense media attention regarding the Authority. Note to DC: Trade Paperbacks are your future. Stop dicking about with them.]
$17.95 - 192pages - Full color - Page 93 - Order number SEP000530
POWERS #7 - By Brian Michael Bendis & Mike Avon Oeming
It’s not enough that Warren Ellis be mentioned every 8 seconds on-line, or in any random comic magazine. Now he’s invading comic books! Next thing you know, the ‘old bastard’ will be getting mentioned in rock & roll magazines. All I know about this is that Bendis has promised that something horrible happens to Ellis, and that’s bound to be fun for his fans, and critics alike. (I should also mention that it’s a stand alone story, and a great jumping on point if you’ve yet to read this wonderful book)
$2.95 - 32pages – Full Color - Page 130 - Order number SEP001233
RUMBLE GIRLS: SILKY WARRIOR TANSIE #5 - By Lea Hernandez
If you haven’t read this book yet, then shame on you. It’s a treat and a half, and one of the most original new comics to come along in ages. This issue also features part one of POPPY; Lea’s three part collaboration with, who else, Warren Ellis.
$3.50 - 32pages – B&W - Page 132 - Order number SEP001235
FANTASTIC FOUR’S BIG TOWN #1 of 4 - By Steve Englehart, Mike McKone and Mark McKenna
What this is children, is the return of WHAT IF? . You remember WHAT IF? don’t you? It’s the Marvel version of Elseworlds that was never as cool as it could have been. Well, this looks like it might finally be the WHAT IF? that gets it right. Why didn’t Reed Richards ever share all of his super cool gizmos with the regular world? Well, What If he did? Sounds like a fun concept. [Editor's Note: I love Mike McKone's artwork. A lot. I'm actually looking forward to this, despite myself. Still, as the pundits say, only Marvel can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm sure the interior colouring will be hideous, or the paper quality will be shite, or someone will slip in a racial slur or something...]

BLACK WIDOW: BREAKDOWN #1 of 3 - By Greg Rucka, Devin Grayson & Scott Hampton
Continuing in the winning streak that never seems to end, Marvel Knights unleashes the follow-up to the slick and cool BLACK WIDOW series with this collaboration between the writers who made BATMAN matter again, Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka. If this book is half as cool as the first, sign me up.

ARSENIC LULLABY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL #1 – By Douglas Paszkiewicz
I discovered this sick little series at this years San Diego Comic Convention and have been in love ever since. I should warn you however, if zombie fetus’ aren’t something that you’d find amusing, the series might not be for you. It’s deadly funny though.
$2.50 - 32pages – B&W - Page 196 - Order number SEP001715
HOW TO BURN YOUR BRIDGES LESSION ONE!
YOUNGBLOOD GENESIS #1 – By Kurt Busiek (?) Eric Walker & Chad Walker
It looks like Rob has finally ran out of Alex Ross artwork that was hastily doodled on dinner napkins, so he’s decided to find another gimmick to sell comics that will never come out. As noted above, Kurt Busiek is listed the full writer of this new YOUNGBLOOD series. Kurt says he just wrote a plot. Rob Liefeld, who obviously doesn’t know what a writer is, says that means he that Kurt is the writer. Silly Rob, do you go out of your way to make yourself look foolish, or are these just happy accidents?

BLAST FROM THE PAST!
LOVE & ROCKETS BOOK ONE: MUSIC FOR MECHANICS – By Los Bros Hernandez
Anyone who knows me, know how hard I get over anything and everything by the Hernandez clan. I picked up my first LOVE & ROCKETS comic, god, nearly 13 years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. This collection is where it all came from, and I can’t stress how much you’re missing by not reading this series. This is the books SIXTH printing, so obviously I'm not the only person who thinks you should be reading it.
$18.95 – 152 oversized pages – B&W - Page 258 - Order number SEP001976
GOD NO! MAKE IT STOP!
VAMPI #1 CONVENTION SPECIAL – By Conway & Lau
Stop it, stop it, stop it, and stop it! Kevin Lau, I'm talking to you, stop showing up on the covers of these comics dressed up as Chow Yun Fat’s short, borderline retarded, dorky cousin. It was mildly entertaining the first time, now I'm just starting to question your sanity.
Granted, this is a scary picture.
$9.95 – 24pages – B&W - Page 264 - Order number You don’t really want this crap for 10 bucks do you?

HOW TO MAKE THOUSANDS OF GEEKS ORGASM IN UNISON OR...
STAR WARS 300TH EDITION BOBA FETT FIGURE
Sigh. Twelve bucks for a 3¾-inch toy. While we’re on the subject, why the hell is Boba Fett such a popular character anyways? He had what, like three lines, and got bitch-slapped by whiney ass Luke. Please, you better check yourself, punk. [Editor's Note: Yes, and CTHULHU is much less of a geeky in-joke. Particularly in Plush Doll Form...]
